Japan vs. Argentina – Olympic Basketball, August 1, 2021

| July 30, 2021 7:04 am PDT

For the Japan men’s national basketball team, Sunday marks the end of what was a long-awaited journey as the host nation in the Summer Olympics. For the Argentinian squad, their time in Tokyo is also on the verge of being wrapped up.

Unless Sergio Hernandez and his men take care of business in sincere fashion, they’ll join Japan among the four teams that don’t qualify for the knockout stage.

Before disclosing my Japan vs. Argentina pick, I’ll run through the odds and highlight where each team must show improvement.

The top apps for betting on the Olympics aren’t showing much faith in Japan. Argentina has lost by 18 and 10 in group play and yet finds itself as a double-digit favorite in this matchup.

Japan outplayed Spain in the second half in their opener and had appeared to garner some momentum, but a 35-point drubbing at the hands of Slovenia brings the host nation back to square one.

Japan’s Biggest Weakness – Depth

Hailed as one of the basketball players to watch at the Tokyo Olympics, Rui Hachimura has lived up to the hype. After leading the way with 20 points in game #1 versus Spain, the Wizards forward went off for 34 against Slovenia.

Yuta Watanabe played a nice all-around game against the Spaniards and is averaging 18 ppg thus far. HC Julio Lamas has to be pleased with the production he’s getting from his top-two players. The problem is Hachimura and Watanabe are getting very little help.

Yudai Baba is shooting 40% from the floor and is yet to hit a three-pointer in the competition. He’s averaging 5.5 ppg and has racked up as many turnovers (6) as assists.

As much as Japan’s point guard has struggled, their starting shooting guard has been equally as disappointing. Daiki Tanaka is shooting 25% from the field and has scored a total of eight points.

Argentina’s Biggest Weakness – Three-Point Shooting

Argentina loves shooting the three – they’ve attempted at least 30 in each game, and everyone on the floor has the green light to chuck it. However, they’ve connected on just 15 of their 61 3PT FG attempts (24.5%).

Facundo Campazzo is 4/16 from beyond the arc, Luca Vildoza is 1/8, and Gabriel Deck is 1/9.

Luis Scola and his crew were outrebounded 59-32 against Slovenia and turned the ball over 24 times versus Spain; there’s a lot that needs to be fixed in a short amount of time if the Argentines plan on staying in Tokyo beyond Sunday’s game.

Having said that, making fewer than a quarter of your outside shots is tough to overcome, especially when you’re attempting them at an alarming rate.

Japan vs. Argentina Betting Pick

The Argentines should win this game with as much as there is on the line, but a bet on Japan pulling off an upset has plenty of merit. Argentina looked sluggish during exhibition play in Vegas, and their poor play has carried into the Olympics.

You can back Japan at +400 at most top sites, although XBet is letting you at +426.

While I considered taking Japan the points, my ultimate Japan vs. Argentina prediction has me circling back to the total.

Argentina is surrendering 99.5 points per game in Group C play. Japan’s defense has been even less dependable, allowing a whopping 102 points per game. In what could be the final game in Tokyo for both of the teams involved, look for the gloves to come off as they both go out swinging.
