Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren – April 17, 2021

Expect a torrent of predictions and picks for the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren fight on April 17.
Now, I’m expecting many of these prognostications to come from those who have absolutely no idea how to call this fight. In other words, Paul’s YouTuber fraternity will be giving their two cents on their hero in his quest to beat Askren under codified boxing rules.
Ignore those guys at all costs. Instead, check out my predictions and betting pick for the fight, as well as the best bets for Paul vs. Askren and a sound rationale for why Ben Askren will beat Jake Paul on the night.
Let’s do this!
Who Wins Between Paul and Askren?
- Ben Askren by Decision
Can Askren beat Paul by KO/TKO? Yes, he can. And no, I have not lost my mind.
Askren is not known for his striking, so the idea that he can knock Paul out with a powerful, well-timed punch does sound pretty funny. But there is something much more important than power in this fight, which applies to Paul as much as it does to “Funky” Ben.
Although the MMA legend can win by stoppage, I think Askren by decision is the best bet. If you want to find out why my prediction for Paul vs. Askren is a win for the dual-promotion world MMA champion, stick with me. I’ll get to it a little later.
First, let’s first cover the best odds for Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren online.
Latest Odds for Paul vs. Askren
When I put together my initial preview for betting on this fight, the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren odds looked much different.
In fact, Paul was a -250 favorite, with Askren rocking in at +195. Now, as you can see, the betting line for Paul vs. Askren resembles more of a pick ’em than ever before.
The odds above come courtesy of MyBookie, who tend to have some of the best specials for fights like these. I’ll be hoping that the prop bets for Paul vs. Askren are as good as the ones the online bookmaker released for Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr., at very least.
At the time of writing, the props and specials for this “boxing match” are still yet to be released. But I’m going to give you a few Paul vs. Askren bet tips to focus on once the markets hit the web.
Best Bets for Paul vs. Askren
- Askren to Win -105
- Askren to Win by Decision (N/A)
- Fight Over 4.5 Rounds (N/A)
First and foremost, if your betting pick for Paul vs. Askren is Ben, take him to win at -105.
The amount of ungodly garbage that has been thrown at this man in recent weeks has been astonishing. He is a former ONE FC and Bellator champion with wins over Douglas Lima, Andrey Koreshkov, Shinya Aoki, and Robbie Lawler!
Sure, he will be restricted to his fists against Jake Paul. But this is Paul, a YouTuber that has two pro wins over a fellow internet celebrity and a small basketball player that couldn’t punch his way out of a spider web.
Askren could beat Paul by wearing him down with dirty boxing and using his superior strength (that’s right) and years of elite-level competitive experience to drain his battery. But I think Askren to beat Paul by decision makes more sense.
Finally, this is an eight-round fight that will go past the halfway point. Askren doesn’t have the power to KO Paul early, while Paul will find that Askren has a rock-solid chin, as evidenced by the shots he has eaten from absolute murderers over the years.
Why Askren Beats Paul
There is no doubt that Ben Askren’s weakness lies in his striking on the feet.
But if this were the opposite of the truth, Paul wouldn’t be fighting him, would he? The YouTuber’s team has targeted Funky to make it look as though their man can beat a double promotion world champion.
However, I think Paul is in for a shock when he gets in there with Askren. Unless he lands an unbelievably lucky punch, he’s losing this fight. Why? Well, I’m not going to make predictions or my Paul vs. Askren pick on the basis that some internet celebrity for kids can go in there and beat a top-class MMA world champion. That’s regardless of whether Askren can throw a punch or not.
His striking is not glorious. But without understanding the fundamentals — as well as distance, range, poise, and composure — there is no way Askren could have beaten some of the best fighters in mixed martial arts.
He doesn’t need power against Paul, as the YouTuber is not a professional-level fighter. Sure, he can throw a punch, but he won’t be able to outwit Askren. He is not experienced enough to be efficient with his energy, which could see him badly embarrassed.
My prediction for Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren is Askren to win by unanimous decision.
