Sleeper Picks for the 2020 Italian Open – 3 Dark Horses at Chervo Golf Club

| October 20, 2020 12:29 pm PDT

Spain’s Adrian Otaegui emerged in Scotland, proving yet again that gambling on a dark horse can pay off on the European Tour. With the action moving to northern Italy at a venue unfamiliar to most, perhaps it’s the perfect opportunity to take a stab on some long shots.

I’ve got three Italian Open sleepers in mind.

Adri Arnaus +4000

Sandwiched between the favorites and the unheralded names that bring up the rear of the betting sheet, Adri Arnaus is worth a look at +4000. Two wins on the Alps Tour and a victory on the Challenge Tour allude to his ability to close out a golf tournament, and a decorated amateur career only adds to the intrigue.

As for recent form, Arnaus arrives in Brescia with nothing worse than a T32 among his last three starts.

Showcased with top-20 upside in my Italian Open predictions, hoisting the trophy on Sunday isn’t out of the question.

Johannes Veerman +5000

After touting Adri Arnaus above, how about targeting one of his college teammates at Texas A&M?

No appearances since withdrawing after one round at the Irish Open doesn’t exactly scream “back Johannes Veerman,” but dig beneath the surface. Veerman posted back-to-back top-10s at Valderrama and in Vilamoura in his two prior starts.

The 6’4” former Aggie has effortless power and has improved in a number of key areas this season. Case in point – Veerman ranked 61st in GIR and 100th in stroke average on the European Tour in 2019. In 2020, Johannes clocks in at 13th and 11th in those two stats, respectively.

Laurie Canter +6600

You’ll probably read about Laurie Canter wherever someone is talking about sleeper picks for the Italian Open. Excusing the Englishman’s MC at the Scottish Open, Canter was riding a streak of four consecutive top-15 finishes. This includes a 5th at the ISPS HANDA Wales Open and a runner-up showing at the Portugal Masters.

From outside of the top 500 in the OWGR at the start of 2020 to being on the brink of breaking into the top 200, it’s been a fruitful season for the soon-to-be 31-year-old golfer. Then again, what else would you expect from a guy who hits frozen rope after frozen rope?
