Inter Miami vs. LA Galaxy – MLS, April 18, 2021

| April 17, 2021 3:47 am PDT

Phil Neville will take charge of his first MLS game as Inter Miami head coach when the Galaxy visits Florida on Sunday, April 18. In the opposite dugout, Greg Vanney will open his coaching account for the club that he represented more than 200 times as a player.

The Herons (1.04 PPG) finished just one place ahead of the Galaxy (1.00 PPG) in the overall standings last season. Still, it’s fair to say that neither side enjoyed too much success in 2020.

Before we get to my Inter Miami vs. LA Galaxy prediction, let’s check out the odds and take a closer look at the teams.

Inter Miami vs. LA Galaxy Odds

Inter Miami to Win1.83
The Draw3.50
LA Galaxy to Win3.85

The best online sports betting sites have clearly taken home-field advantage into consideration when pricing up this once, as there was very little to separate these two sides last year.

Given that both clubs are entering the 2021 MLS season under new management, this game could go either way. With that in mind, the tasty odds for the draw and the away win stand out at first glance.

Inter Miami Team News and Analysis

It was always going to be difficult for Diego Alonso to please everyone during Inter Miami’s maiden MLS campaign. As it turned out, the Uruguayan was fired at the end of last term, despite having guided the club to the playoffs.

Granted, the Herons barely scraped into the tenth and final postseason berth in the Eastern Conference. But they should still be given credit for getting there.

Looking at the bigger picture – Miami only managed to win seven of their 23 regular-season matches, suffering 13 defeats along the way.

It is also worth noting that just two sides finished with a poorer goal difference in the East.

Neville has inherited a strong roster, headlined by ex-Juventus stars Blaise Matuidi and Gonzalo Higuain. Former Stoke City center-back Ryan Shawcross has been acquired to strengthen the backline, along with right-back Kelvin Leerdam.

It is difficult to predict exactly how the Herons will fare under their new head coach. But with a season of MLS experience in the bank, they will surely come back stronger this year.

LA Galaxy Team News and Analysis

As we know, the Galaxy will also be aiming to get to grips with a big offseason change during the early stages of the new campaign.

Following six successful years at Toronto FC, big things are expected of Vanney. But after the Galaxy failed to qualify for the playoffs for just the third time in 12 seasons last term, the new head coach has plenty of work to do.

With players like Sebastian Lletget, Jonathan dos Santos, and Efrain Alvarez on board, the 2021 LA Galaxy roster is packed with midfield stars. However, the team struggled at both ends of the pitch last season – and that could be a problem again this year.

Only Real Salt Lake scored fewer goals in the Western Conference last term, while only San Jose Earthquakes conceded more. It goes without saying that Vanney must address those issues.

If Javier Hernandez rediscovers his shooting boots, the Galaxy should improve on last year’s shortcomings. But if the striker’s woes continue, the team is likely to struggle for goals in 2021.

My Inter Miami vs. LA Galaxy Betting Pick

  • The Draw

In all honesty, this is one of the toughest games to predict on the opening weekend of the 2021 MLS season. With two new coaches going head-to-head, Sunday’s clash is destined to be an intriguing battle.

Having taken everything into account, I believe the draw is the best bet for Inter Miami vs. LA Galaxy. Neither side will want to kick off the new campaign with a loss, meaning both teams will probably be happy to share the points.
