Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati – MLS, November 8, 2020
Despite winning just six of their 22 matches this season, Inter Miami still stands an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. But the Herons must beat Cincinnati on Sunday and hope that results elsewhere go in their favor.
Diego Alonso’s men currently find themselves twelfth in the Eastern Conference standings – two points shy of tenth-place Chicago Fire and six points ahead of last-place Cincinnati. Needless to say, the Orange & Blue can no longer attain a postseason berth.
I discuss the bookmakers’ odds and preview the game before providing my Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati pick.
Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati Odds
Don’t get me wrong, I believe that Inter Miami (1.41) is the favorite to win this game. But I wasn’t expecting the odds gap for this matchup to be so big.
Cincinnati (6.50) has undoubtedly been one of the worst teams in MLS this year, but the Herons haven’t exactly set the league alight. In my opinion, the price for the home win is far too low here.
Inter Miami looked set to make a late surge into the playoff spots last month. Back-to-back victories over New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo were followed by a draw with Atlanta United, before the Diego Alonso’s men clinched a hugely impressive win against Florida rival Orlando City.
But it’s been all downhill since then.
Miami heads into the final day of the regular season having lost three of their last four outings. After suffering a defeat to Montreal Impact, successive losses to FC Dallas and Toronto FC have taken the Herons’ destiny out of their hands.
Granted, Alonso’s men have shown great spirit in recent weeks. Three 2-1 defeats prove that Miami has pushed their opponents close, yet the team has invariably failed to get over the line.
The Herons must now rely on favorable results elsewhere to finish in the top ten, but they also need to take care of their own business on Sunday.
On the flip side, Cincinnati has been out of the playoff conversation for a while now. The Ohio outfit has endured another below-par campaign, with the postseason remaining a distant dream for the Orange & Blue.
In all honesty, Jaap Stam’s men can have no complaints. They have only managed to score a measly 11 goals in 22 regular-season games this year, and while they don’t have the worst defensive record, a severe lack of attacking firepower has obviously been a real issue.
A 2-0 defeat to Atlanta last weekend means that Cincinnati has lost their previous four games, while the club has only managed to win one of their last ten outings.
The Orange & Blue will no doubt be looking to finish the season on a high, although judging by the team’s recent performances, that is probably easier said than done.
Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati Betting Pick
Inter Miami to Win1.41
I would love the price for the Inter Miami win to be higher here, but the top online betting sites clearly don’t think that Cincinnati stands any chance of upsetting the odds on Sunday.
I was tempted by the big price for the draw. However, Stam’s men have been dreadful all season, and I can’t see that changing in their final game of the campaign.
