Inter Miami vs. DC United – MLS, May 29, 2021

Just two points separate Inter Miami and DC United in the Eastern Conference as the two sides prepare to face off in Florida on Saturday, May 29.

Having only managed to win one of their last five matches (two draws, two losses), the Herons have slipped to ninth in the standings. Meanwhile, a run of two wins and five defeats has left DC in eleventh – two points ahead of last-place Cincinnati.

In this Inter Miami vs. DC United betting preview, I assess the MLS odds, analyze the teams, and give my prediction and pick for Saturday’s clash at the end.

All the top-rated online sportsbooks view Inter Miami as the clear frontrunner to win this one. Phil Neville’s men may have struggled for consistency so far this year. But let’s face it – DC United has been even worse.

That said, looking at the Herons’ recent run of results, there is arguably value to be found in the odds for the draw and the away win here.

A record of 2-2-3 underlines Inter Miami’s iffy start to the 2021 MLS campaign. While the team has picked up a couple of solid wins, there have also been some questionable performances.

After losing to the Galaxy in Week 1, Neville’s men beat Philadelphia before drawing with Nashville and Atlanta. At that stage, there weren’t any real issues.

However, the Herons managed just a single shot on target as they suffered a tepid 2-0 loss to Montreal in Week 5. A narrow 3-2 victory over Cincy came soon after, but they quickly returned to losing ways last time out – going down 1-0 to Chicago.

With four goals and one assist to his name, it’s fair to say that Gonzalo Higuain is trying his best to turn things around. But if his teammates don’t wake up, the Herons will continue to struggle.

Thankfully for Neville’s men, DC United isn’t likely to cause them too many problems this weekend. I mean, a record of 2-0-5 doesn’t look pretty, does it?

The Hernan Losada era began with a shock 2-1 victory over New York City, although three straight defeats swiftly followed. DC lost to New England, San Jose, and Columbus before beating Chicago a fortnight ago.

Granted, the Black-and-Red have put in a couple of battling displays against Orlando and Philly since then. But they still head into Week 7 on the back of consecutive defeats.

Things are looking pretty bleak for the Washington club, having taken just six points from a possible 21 this season.

To make matters worse, Losada’s men have only netted five goals this year – making them the second-lowest scorers in the division. They have also conceded 11, meaning they have the second-worst defensive record, too.

I really don’t like the look of the low price for the home win here. Yes, Miami is the deserved favorite. But given that Neville’s men have only picked up one win in their last five games, odds of 1.74 don’t exactly get me excited.

For that reason, the draw is my Inter Miami vs. DC United betting pick. The Black-and-Red have suffered narrow 1-0 losses to Orlando and Philly in their previous two outings, so I can see them frustrating a struggling Miami side and snatching a point on Saturday.
