Top Pick and Prediction for Inter vs. Bologna – Serie A (September 18, 2021)
It is a very different Inter that has started this season than the one that ended Juve’s streak of titles in May.
Romelu Lukaku has left to answer his English critics at Chelsea, Achraf Hakimi was tempted by the riches of Paris Saint-Germain, and Antonio Conte had one too many disagreements with the club’s owners.
This week the all-new Nerazzurri face Bologna in the San Siro as it attempts to keep up with the early season front runners.
Bologna had a slightly quieter off season but head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic will be hoping that his team can push on after doing no more than meandering around the lower half of the table since being promoted back to Serie A in 2015.
Inter will go into this fixture as the big favorite, of course. But can the Rossoblu cause an upset and hamper Simone Inzaghi’s plans of repeating the home side’s title win of last season?
Let’s find out in my Inter vs. Bologna prediction and pick.
Inter Must Win San Siro Games
Simone Inzaghi’s attention will have been on Wednesday’s heavyweight Champions League clash with Real Madrid for the majority of this week.
But if he is to emulate Antonio Conte’s achievement from last season he will need to make sure that his players concentrate on domestic matters just as intently.
To be fair, Inter has made a good start to the new campaign, looking very good in the first two games before being unable to see off Sampdoria last weekend.
Lifelong fan Federico DiMarco scored an excellent free-kick to open the scoring but his side was unable to overcome a stubborn Samp in the end.
Dzeko will not be as dominant as Lukaku up front for the Nerazzurri, but he will want to show that he can be just as deadly in Serie A. A lot will depend on how the Real Madrid game goes, but three points will be expected on Saturday.
Can Bologna Cause an Upset in Milan?
Sinisa Mihajlovic was impressed with his team’s defensive strength in the 1-0 win against Hellas Verona on Monday.
Even though Verona had lost both its previous games, the Rossoblu managed to keep a clean sheet and took the three points thanks to Matthias Svanberg’s second half strike.
It was the second clean sheet in a row for Bologna, after a very impressive performance away at Atalanta just before the international break. Both those results suggest that this could be a better season for Mihajlovic’s side – and that Takehiro Tomiyasu’s departure for Arsenal has not affected the team too much.
The big summer signing – Marko Arnautovic – was unable to add to his goal tally against Verona, but he is already looking like he will add some bite to Bologna’s attack this season.
He will relish playing against Inter’s defense on Saturday as well, but may find that he has little to do with most of the action likely to be up the other end of the pitch.
Latest Odds for Inter vs. Bologna
No surprises with the odds for this one. Inter is the reigning champion after all – and is unbeaten this season after three games.
Those odds for the draw look relatively interesting, but it would be a big surprise if Bologna were able to come away from the San Siro with even a point here.
My Inter vs. Bologna Prediction and Pick
Inter to Win-260
I can’t see any way that Inter will allow Bologna to derail its ambitions of keeping up with – and ultimately overtaking – the likes of Roma and Napoli at the top of the table. The post-Lukaku era has now begun and Inter is still one of the most powerful clubs in Serie A.
Inzaghi’s side has also shown that it can still score goals. There have been nine in just the three games so far, so the signings made in the summer are already paying dividends.
BetOnline is also offering a price of +100 giving Inter a 1.5 goal head start as well. So, if the moneyline odds don’t seem that enticing, that could be another option for those looking to back Inter on Saturday.
