Indiana Grand Race Course Picks – Thursday, October 15, 2020

Ever seen a thoroughbred race where 70% of the entries were longshots? You will today at Indiana Grand.
Also, remember that Indiana Grand welcomes spectators, so if you attend the races there today, expect rain, temps in the upper 50s, and winds around 12 mph.
Read on for my Indiana Grand Race Course picks and tips for Thursday.
Pick for Indiana Grand Race Course Race 2
This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of five furlongs on turf for a purse of $31,000.
I like whichever horse Deshawn Parker ends up riding, turf or main track. On turf, it’s the second-favored (7/2) Cavatina, a gelding with two non-paying career starts but has nevertheless performed well in recent workouts. And on the main track, my win bet would be on the 7/2 Wayakin, a colt who moneyed in two of his three career starts.
If jockeys change and/or somehow both horses wind up competing, bet Wayakin to win.
There are several longshots in this race, but none show any sign of finishing in the same zip code as money.
- Win: Wayakin/Cavatina 7/2
Pick for Indiana Grand Race Course Race 5
This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $31,000.
I’m going with the 5/2 morning line favorite in this maiden race—Dodger, with Marcelino Pedroza in the irons. This three-year-old ridgling finished in the money one of his five career starts (one of which he was a DNF due to a broken bridle). In this field, that makes him the statistical leader.
I see no longer-odds entries here that could deliver a money finish, so let’s save our money for later.
- Win: Dodger 5/2
Pick for Indiana Grand Race Course Race 7
This is a maiden special weight race for Indiana-bred and -sired three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 7-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $35,000.
I’m sticking with the 1/1 morning line favorite in this race—Fashion Nugget, with Thomas Pompell aboard. This four-year-old gelding moneyed five of his 11 career starts, making him far and away the leader in this field.
Speaking of this field, there are three 20/1 and four 30/1 longshots in this race—and all appear to have been born to disappoint.
- Win: Fashion Nugget 1/1
