India vs. England Betting Preview – First T20, March 12, 2021
Following a comprehensive 3-1 Test series win for India, England will be looking to make amends in the first of five T20 games between the two sides on Friday, March 12.
The hosts humiliated the tourists in the recent Test series, although there is a sense that England will be able to compete more closely with India in the shorter format of the game.
After looking at the bookmakers’ odds, I will share my India vs. England prediction and betting pick for the first T20.
India vs. England First T20 Betting Odds
It is hardly surprising that all of the top online sports betting sites view India (1.68) as the favorite to win the first T20. After all, the Men in Blue are known for being devastating on home soil.
Still, it is important to remember that England (2.05) is more than capable of beating India in this format, so you’d be stupid to write off the tourists altogether.
India vs. England First T20 Preview
After losing the first Test, India claimed three straightforward wins to seal an emphatic 3-1 series victory over England last week. However, all the focus now turns to five T20s in the space of eight days.
Of course, Test heroes like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant have stuck around to be part of India’s T20 squad. But the addition of players such as Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul makes the hosts’ team even stronger.
Back in December, the Men in Blue edged Australia 2-1 in a three-game T20 series Down Under, winning by 11 runs in the first clash before triumphing by six wickets in the second match. But they ultimately suffered a 12-run loss in the third game.
Prior to that series, India’s previous T20 action came all the way back in February 2020. New Zealand hosted the Indians on that occasion, with the visitors claiming a 5-0 series whitewash.
Having won seven of their last eight T20 games, the Men in Blue will be confident of inflicting further damage on England.
On the flip side, England boasts a new-look squad for the T20 series. In fact, the new group of players is almost unrecognizable from the Test team.
Captain Eoin Morgan has been joined by big-hitters like Dawid Malan, Jason Roy, and Liam Livingstone, while Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, and Mark Wood have teamed up with the squad to add bowling depth.
England last played a T20 match back in December, claiming a nine-wicket win over South Africa. That victory wrapped up a 3-0 series win for Morgan and co. against the Proteas, with Malan (99*) and Jos Buttler (67*) starring with the bat.
Scores of 19, 55, and 99* saw Malan rack up 173 runs in three games against South Africa. As the world’s number-one ranked T20I batsman, it goes without saying that Malan will need to play a key role for England on Friday.
If the Indians can tear through the tourists’ top order like they did in the recent Tests, England could struggle to compete.
India vs. England First T20 Prediction and Pick
England to Win2.05
Having taken everything into consideration, I’m going against the bookies and backing England to win the first T20. We all know that India dominated the Test series, but England is a completely different animal in the shorter format of the game.
Don’t get me wrong, this is likely to be a closely-fought contest. But I really like the look of England’s fresh squad, so I can see the visitors taking a 1-0 lead on Friday.
