India vs. England – Cricket, Third Test, February 24, 2021

| February 23, 2021 12:11 pm PDT

England’s tour of India moves to Motera Stadium on Wednesday, February 24, as the third of four Tests kicks off at the biggest cricket stadium on the planet.

The series is finely poised at 1-1 following India’s mammoth 317-run win in the second Test, although the tourists can still take confidence from their impressive victory in the series opener.

After looking at the odds, I will share my India vs. England third Test prediction and betting pick.

India vs. England Third Test Odds

India to Win1.53
The Draw6.00
England to Win3.75

After totally dominating the tourists in the previous match, India (1.53) is the deserved favorite to win the Third test with all the top online sports betting sites.

Having started out at 3.45 to win the second Test, England (3.75) is even less favored this time around. But can the visitors hold out for an unlikely draw (6.00)?

I assess both sides’ prospects below.

India vs. England Third Test Preview

It’s safe to say that India was eager to make amends following a disappointing loss for the hosts in the first Test.

After losing by 227 runs in the series opener, the Men in Blue wasted no time in asserting their authority on the second Test. Rohit Sharma smashed 161 of 231 to get his team off to a flier before Ravichandran Ashwin (5/43) shone with the ball, limiting England to just 134.

In the second innings, Ashwin showed what he could do with the ball. The veteran scored an outstanding century to take the game away from the tourists, while Virat Kohli (62) also rediscovered some form.

Axar Patel (5/60) claimed the second five-wicket haul of the match on day four, with England eventually falling 317 runs shorts.

Last time out, India was almost unrecognizable from the first Test. The Men in Blue thrived on the home conditions, making it very difficult to back England this time around.

After posting scores of 228 and 186 in Sri Lanka last month, England captain Joe Root opened his account in India with another double-century in the first Test. But the Indians managed to nullify his threat in the second Test.

It could be argued that if Root doesn’t post a big score, England invariably struggles.

Ben Foakes (42*) was the visitors’ highest scorers in the first innings, with Moeen Ali (43) top-scoring in the second innings. But with no England player managing to get past 50, it is pretty obvious that Root and co. failed to challenge India.

In fact, Ali was England’s best bowler, too, claiming figures of 4/128 and 4/98. However, the handy all-rounder has since left the camp and returned home.

Jofra Archer is likely to come back into the team, with England expected to favor a seam-heavy attack for this day-nighter. Still, the tourists will need to up their game considerably if they are to compete with India in the third Test.

India vs. England Third Test Pick

  • India to Win

There is no denying that the third Test will feel a lot different from the previous two. With up 55,000 fans expected to be present at Motera Stadium, India will undoubtedly get an extra boost.

The day-night format could favor England’s pacemen, but at the end of the day, I can’t see India losing this one. The hosts were completely dominant last time out – and that dominance is likely to continue on Wednesday.
