India and England’s four-Test series gets underway on Friday, February 5, with the first match taking place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The hosts head into this series on the back of a memorable tour of Australia, while England warmed up with a comfortable 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka.

If you’re wagering on the first Test, make sure you check out my India vs. England prediction and betting preview below.

India vs. England First Test Odds

India to Win1.42
The Draw5.50
England to Win5.25

It’s safe to say that 10bet hasn’t sprung any surprises with their odds for the first Test.

As expected, India (1.42) is the clear home favorite to come out on top, while England (5.25) is expected to struggle to compete with the world’s number-two ranked Test team.

Let’s take a closer look at both sides.

India vs. England First Test Preview

The Indians will probably still be on cloud nine following their remarkable series win over Australia last month.

Having lost the first Test against the Aussies in spectacular fashion, posting just 36 runs in their second innings, it looked as though India’s tour was doomed. However, the Men in Blue managed to turn things around in style.

Without the absent Virat Kohli and the injured Mohammed Shami, India clinched a famous three-wicket victory in the fourth and final Test, sealing an unlikely 2-1 series win. Both men are set to return to the field on Friday, giving their side a massive boost.

Ajinkya Rahane deputized admirably in Kohli’s absence Down Under. The stand-in captain notched up an outstanding century in the second Test, while youngster Shubman Gill also impressed.

If the Indians can pick up where they left off in Australia, England will find it extremely difficult to get the better of the hosts.

England hasn’t played much Test cricket recently, although two relatively straightforward wins against Sri Lanka last month set the team up nicely for the biggest subcontinent challenge that the sport has to offer.

England’s spinners excelled in Galle, with Dom Bess and Jack Leach both claiming five-wicket hauls in the first Test. The pair took further four wickets in the second Test, while James Anderson posted figures of 6/40.

However, Joe Root stole the headlines with two sublime innings. The England captain scored 228 as his side secured a seven-wicket victory in the first Test, before scoring 186 in the second match.

Needless to say, if the visitors are to give the Barmy Army something to cheer about back home, Root will need to replicate the kind of form that he showed in Sri Lanka.

But as we know, India poses a completely different threat altogether.

India vs. England First Test Pick

  • India to Win

Don’t get me wrong – the odds for both the draw and the England win are very tempting here. Having said that, I just can’t see India losing the first Test.

Playing on home soil, the Indians have a big advantage in this series. Root and co. showed glimpses of what they can do in tricky conditions against Sri Lanka, yet I’m confident that India will kick off the four-Test series with a victory in the first match.
