Houston Dynamo vs. Vancouver Whitecaps – MLS, May 22, 2021
Just one point separates Houston and Vancouver as the two sides prepare to battle at BBVA Stadium on Saturday, May 22.
A record of W2-D2-L2 underlines the Dynamo’s unpredictable start to the season. Needless to say, Tab Ramos will be eager for his team to establish a sense of consistency in the coming weeks.
On the flip side, the Whitecaps have lost three of their six matches this year and head into Saturday’s clash on the back of two straight defeats.
I share my Houston Dynamo vs. Vancouver Whitecaps prediction and pick at the end of this betting preview. But first, let’s analyze the odds and take a closer look at the teams.
Houston vs. Vancouver Odds
It could be argued that Houston has enjoyed a slightly better start to the season than Vancouver. However, I really don’t understand why the odds for the draw and the away win are so high here.
At the end of the day, the gulf between these two sides isn’t that big. Yes, the Dynamo has the home-field advantage, but the Caps could easily come away from Texas with at least a point.
Aside from the Houston win, the online sportsbooks offer excellent value with these odds.
Assessing the Teams
Ramos’ men would have been brimming with belief after losing just one of their opening five games this season. I mean, on their way to finishing rock bottom of the Western Conference last year, they only managed to win four of their 23 matches.
While there is no denying that Houston has made some improvements this term, the team was completely outclassed by Colorado last weekend.
The Dynamo saw just 37% possession at DSG Park and ended up conceding three goals before half-time. Christian Ramirez pulled a goal bake for his side, although the damage had already been done.
Having claimed wins over San Jose and Sporting KC, as well as draws with LAFC and Dallas, Ramos’ men have already proved they can compete with some of the top teams in the West this season.
But if they continue to suffer heavy defeats to the division’s lesser sides, they will struggle to end their four-year wait for a playoff berth.
The Caps also conceded three goals in their previous outing, but unlike Houston, they were unable to hit back in reply. SKC enjoyed 68% possession and racked up 26 shots last weekend, while Vancouver managed just two attempts on target.
Marc Dos Santos’s men kicked off their campaign with an impressive win over the Timbers before holding Toronto to a draw. They have also beaten Montreal this season, but that feels like a long time ago now.
Not only have the Canadians lost three of their last four matches, but they also failed to score in all three of those defeats. As a result, no team in the West has netted fewer goals than Vancouver in 2021.
Cristian Dajome started the season in eye-catching form, bagging three goals in the first four games. But following his brace against Montreal, the Colombian winger has gone quiet.
The Caps will need star man Lucas Cavallini to improve on his tally of one goal and one assist if they want to move up the standings.
Houston vs. Vancouver Prediction and Pick
I am disregarding the measly odds for the Houston win right off the bat. If I were going to back the Dynamo to win this one, I would want the price to be above 2.00 at the very least.
The Whitecaps have shown glimpses of real promises this year, preventing Portland, Toronto, and Montreal from winning so far. For that reason, I can see them snatching a draw on Saturday.
At the hugely attractive price of 4.05, the draw bet feels like a no-brainer.
