Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers – MLS, June 23, 2021

| June 23, 2021 7:53 am PDT

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Portland has been one of the most unpredictable teams in Major League Soccer this year. I mean, the Timbers’ record of 4-0-4 underlines just how inconsistent they have been in 2021.

In fairness, Houston (3-3-3) has also been erratic this season. Just when it seems as though the Texans are finding some form, they go and throw away all their hard work and return to their old ways.

Funnily enough, the two sides are locked on 12 points as they prepare to face off at BBVA Stadium this Wednesday, June 23. After analyzing the teams and discussing the odds, I will give my Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers prediction and betting pick.

Houston Dynamo Analysis

Houston’s Last Five Matches:

  • Houston 1-0 Sporting KC (W)
  • Colorado 3-1 Houston (L)
  • Houston 2-1 Vancouver (W)
  • Sporting KC 3-2 Houston (L)
  • LAFC 1-1 Houston (D)

As you can see, the Dynamo has been involved in a series of high-scoring games recently. Three of their previous four outings have produced over 2.5 goals, meaning five of their nine matches this season have seen at least three goals.

The Texans kicked off their 2021 campaign in impressive form, losing just one of their opening five games (two wins, two draws). But since then, they have only managed to pick up one victory in four matches (one draw, two losses).

Not only are Tab Ramos’ men the third-highest scorers in the Western Conference (12), but they also have the joint-worst defensive record in the division (13).

It’s safe to say that Houston has made a decent start to the season, especially when you consider last year’s efforts – or lack thereof! Still, it is worth remembering that they have lost each of their last three meetings with Portland.

Portland Timbers Analysis

Portland’s Last Five Matches:

  • Portland 1-2 Seattle (L)
  • San Jose 0-2 Portland (W)
  • Portland 3-0 LA Galaxy (W)
  • Philadelphia 3-0 Portland (L)
  • Portland 2-1 Sporting KC (W)

We all know that Giovanni Savarese’s men have endured an indifferent start to 2021. However, their recent results suggest they are beginning to head in the right direction.

Having lost three of their opening four games, the Timbers have won three of their previous four. Better still, they netted a combined total of seven goals across their last three victories and only conceded a single goal in the process.

A heavy loss to Philadelphia before the break put an end to Portland’s mini-revival. But after beating Sporting KC last weekend, the team will be confident of overcoming an inconsistent Houston team.

Along with the Galaxy, the Timbers are one of only two sides in the West without a draw to their name this year. That statistic makes it even harder to make a Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers prediction.

Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers Odds

Houston Dynamo to Win2.15
The Draw3.75
Portland Timbers to Win3.05
Over 2.5 Goals1.64
Under 2.5 Goals2.25

10bet views Houston (2.15) as the favorite to win this one, leaving Portland (3.05) as the underdog. But in all honesty, Wednesday’s clash could go either way.

Having taken an in-depth look at the recent form of both sides, it makes sense to steer clear of the regular markets here. Instead, I recommend taking advantage of the goal-based markets.

Houston vs. Portland Prediction and Pick

  • Over 2.5 Goals

The inconsistency of both teams makes it almost impossible to pick a winner here. For that reason, I’m backing over 2.5 goals for my Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers pick.

While Houston’s previous four matches have produced a combined total of 14 goals (3.5 goals per game), six of Portland’s last seven games have dished up over 2.5 goals.
