Houston Dynamo vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS, November 8, 2020

Houston sits bottom of the Western Conference having picked up just 21 points from 22 games this year. Meanwhile, the Rapids have only played 17 games, but they have managed to accumulate 25 points.

With the final standings now being decided on a points-per-game basis, Colorado has booked their spot in the playoffs, with the Dynamo failing to qualify for the postseason.

I honesty do not understand the bookmakers’ viewpoint here. Colorado (3.00) has claimed four points more than Houston (2.10) while playing five games less, yet the home side is the favorite to win this one.

The Rapids head into the final day of the regular season on the back of two hugely impressive victories, while the Dynamo has failed to win any of their previous six outings.

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a year to forget for Houston.

Tab Ramos’ side has only managed to win four of their 22 outings this term. No team in either conference has won fewer games, so it is no surprise that the Dynamo sits bottom of the West with one match left to play.

Houston’s campaign was made even worse by a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Texas rivals FC Dallas last weekend. The Orange recorded just two shots on target at Toyota Stadium, with their previous performance pretty much summing up their season.

Darwin Quintero has tried his best to make things happen for the Dynamo. The Colombian has notched up a very respectable seven goals and seven assists this year, bit his team-mates have been nowhere near as impactful.

Following a month-long lay-off, Colorado initially struggled to readapt. The Rapids were thrashed 4-0 by Sporting Kansas City in their first game back, with a 2-1 defeat to Minnesota United coming a few days later.

However, there is no denying that Robin Fraser’s men are right back in the swing of things now. The Rapids crushed high-flying Seattle Sounders 3-1 last weekend before beating Portland Timbers 1-0 on Wednesday.

The victory over Portland secured the club a place in the playoffs, and I think we can all agree that Colorado’s chances of qualifying for the postseason were pretty slim not so long ago.

But having beaten two of the top three teams in the Western Conference in their last two outings, Fraser’s men will surely be confident of causing more upsets in the coming weeks.

In my opinion, the price for the away win is simply too good to miss here. The Rapids have beaten two of the country’s best teams in a matter of days, so just imagine what they could do to Houston!

With their playoff hopes over, the Dynamo will already be looking ahead to next season. But for Colorado, Sunday’s match provides the team with another opportunity to gather momentum.
