Houston Astros vs. Boston Red Sox – MLB, June 9, 2021

| June 9, 2021 6:04 am PDT

The Houston Astros prepare for another battle at Fenway Park on Wednesday as they battle the Boston Red Sox.

Both teams are close to the top spot in their respective divisions and will battle tooth and nail to keep it that way.

Jake Odorizzi hopes to get the Astros the win, while Nathan Eovaldi toes the rubber on the other side for Boston. Check out this Astros vs. Red Sox prediction and betting pick to find out how to bet on this contest.

Odds for Astros vs. Red Sox

Astros to Win+123
Red Sox to Win-133
Over 9.5-115
Under 9.5-105

The Astros are the understandable road underdogs going into game two of this series at Fenway. Houston has gone a middling 13-13 on the road this year, and they wield a little less power than Boston.

That said, both teams can put up runs in bunches, and the pricing is pretty tight. You could provide a pretty sound argument either way for this one, whether you’re betting on the run line or straight up.

The game total looks interesting and automatically looks like the bet to target. The park is a big boost for Houston, too, while neither pitcher would be classified as an elite ace.

I suspect this should be a competitive game with a good amount of runs. The question, of course, is which team holds the edge, and how should you bet on the total?

Astros vs. Red Sox Game Preview

Both of these teams are in good form. Houston and Boston are both in contention for division titles, they have dangerous offenses, and they’ll benefit from this ballpark.

Boston has the obvious edge at home, where they’ve gone 17-13 on the year.

They’re 7-3 over their last 10 games, too, and they know they need to keep it going with Tampa Bay in front of them and both Toronto and New York breathing down their neck in the AL East.

I don’t see Nathan Eovaldi as a big plus here. He’s a fine pitcher, but he’s far from elite, and Houston is a brutal matchup. He’s been a reverse splits pitcher over the past two years, and he’s giving up some hard contact to righties.

His strikeout rate drops, and his walks spike against the right side of the plate, too. There’s nothing egregious there, but he has to silence guys like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Carlos Correa.

Even though he’s done a fine job against lefties, dispatching Yordan Alvarez, Michael Brantley, and Kyle Tucker won’t exactly be easy, either. Eovaldi has been very useful (7-2, 3.78 ERA) for Boston, but he has not been at his best at home (4.47 ERA, 22 of 28 earned runs allowed).

I will say that he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park (two home runs given up), but maybe that doesn’t hold firm in this matchup.

On the other side is pretty much the same guy in Odorizzi. However, it’s actually been worse for him lately, as Odorizzi has been getting eaten alive by righties and is giving up too much hard contact and fly balls.

This is bad news with a park dip, and Boston has numerous lethal right-handed bats to throw at him.

Odorizzi has not been good (7.16 ERA), with the only positive being that he also has kept the ball from going into the stands at an alarming rate. Again, with everything on paper, I’m not sure what holds up in this dicey spot.

Astros vs. Red Sox Pick for June 9

Are we about to get all of the runs? It certainly looks like it. Don’t get me wrong, Nathan Eovaldi has actually been pretty good in 2021, and both of these pitchers are, in theory, useful arms.

But they’re in impossible spots. Neither guy has excelled against righties, and both will be facing quite a few deadly bats from that side of the plate.

Throw this game into Fenway Park, and fireworks are sure to ensue. I think picking a side is a waste of time here, especially when the Over isn’t totally mispriced. I’ll just hammer the Over all day and bank on the offenses showing up.
