Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers – Big Bash League, December 10, 2020

| December 9, 2020 5:18 am PDT

BBL 10 kicks off on Thursday, December 10, with defending champions Sydney Sixers facing Hobart Hurricanes in Tasmania.

English star Tom Curran has been forced to drop out of the Sixers’ squad due to fatigue, although the arrival of Carlos Brathwaite is a big boost for the Sydneysiders. Meanwhile, Dawid Malan has been brought in to strengthen Hobart’s batting line-up.

I assess the bookmakers’ odds before sharing my Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers prediction and pick.

Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers Odds

Hobart Hurricanes to Win 1.80
Sydney Sixers to Win 2.00

The Sixers (2.00) may be the reigning BBL champs, but the top online betting sites view Hobart (1.80) as the marginal favorite to win the opening match of the domestic T20 campaign.

The Hurricanes have added some big names to their squad during the offseason, but then again, Sydney’s team is also packed with world-class stars.

Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers Preview

Hobart scraped into the playoffs by just a single point last season, finishing fourth in the final standings. Perth and Brisbane narrowly missed out, with the Sixers ending up six points clear of the Hurricanes.

However, the Tasmanians’ playoff campaign was short-lived. Hobart collapsed in the Eliminator, losing to the Thunder by 57 runs. Needless to say, the Hurricanes will be eager to make amends for last term’s shortcomings.

Hobart looks like a complete team this time around. Not only has Dawid Malan – the number one-ranked T20 batsman – joined the squad, but overseas youngsters Keemo Paul and Sandeep Lamichhane offer captain Matthew Wade different bowling dimensions.

Let’s not forget that Hobart was unbeaten against the Sixers last season. The Hurricanes won the first meeting by 25 runs, before a rain-affected match in Sydney saw both sides awarded a point.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques will hope that his team can pick up where they left off last season. The Sydneysiders beat the Stars by 19 runs in last term’s final, clinching their second BBL title in the process.

Of course, Tom Curran’s withdrawal has affected the team’s preparation for the upcoming campaign. The Englishman was the Sixers’ leading wicket-taker last season, claiming 22 scalps in 14 matches. But there are plenty of exciting new faces donning the magenta jersey this year.

On his day, West Indian all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite is capable of singlehandedly winning matches. Jason Holder – Brathwaite’s ODI captain – is also a shrewd acquisition, while Mitchell Starc needs no introduction.

If the new arrivals bed in quickly, the Sixers will almost certainly find themselves at the top end of the standings again.

Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers Betting Pick

  • Hobart Hurricanes to Win

I’m backing Hobart to kick off BBL 10 with a win. I really like the look of the Hurricanes’ well-balanced team this season, and I can see Malan causing his opponents plenty of problems.

The Sixers are likely to push the Hurricanes all the way on Thursday, but I’m confident that Hobart’s new-look line-up will get the job done.
