Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars – Big Bash League, Friday, December 24, 2021
The Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Stars are separated by just a single point as they prepare to do battle in Tasmania on Christmas Eve.
The Hurricanes have lost three of their four matches this season and head into Friday’s clash on the back of two straight defeats. On the flip side, the Stars have registered two wins and two losses so far.
If you’re here for my Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars prediction, I suggest you keep reading. After discussing the odds and analyzing the teams, I will also share a free BBL betting pick for the match.
Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars Odds
The Stars come into this one as the bookmakers’ favorites. Although they sit just one point ahead of Hobart in the table, they have won two of their last three matches.
As for the Hurricanes, they have lost each of their previous two outings. Adam Griffith’s men are more than capable of beating the Stars, but they will need to up their game in order to avoid defeat on Friday.
Anyway, that’s what the cricket betting sites make of this matchup. Before we get to my prediction for Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars, we need to take a closer look at both sides.
Can the Hurricanes Avoid Three Straight Losses?
To say that Hobart has endured a difficult start to the season would be a massive understatement. The Tasmanians have already played two matches against both the Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers – last season’s finalists.
In fact, the Sixers and the Scorchers are the most successful teams in the history of the Big Bash League. They have made 11 final appearances between them, picking up three titles apiece.
With that in mind, the Hurricanes can count themselves fortunate to have won a match this season. They managed to beat the Sixers in their second outing, securing a 44-run victory (with a little help from DLS).
Although Matthew Wade (93) and D’Arcy Short (73*) posted big scores in the win over the Sixers, Hobart’s batters have struggled for consistency this season. Guys like Caleb Jewell and Ben McDermott have failed to chip in.
The Hurricanes were bowled out for just 129 runs in their first match against the Scorchers before scoring 125 last time out. Needless to say, they need to improve with the bat.
Will the Stars Return to Winning Ways?
Funnily enough, the Stars have also suffered two defeats to the Sixers this season. Following a 152-run thrashing in their opening match, they were beaten by seven wickets last time out.
However, they managed to claim back-to-back wins over the Sydney Thunder in between. After sealing a narrow four-run victory in their second outing, they crushed the Thunder by six wickets in the following match.
With the ball, Brody Couch has been the Stars’ biggest wicket threat. The young paceman has already claimed six scalps this season, with Qais Ahmad, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Adam Zampa chipping in along the way.
Let’s not forget that Andre Russell is also destined to shine before too long. The West Indies legend is a threat with both bat and ball, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes his mark on the competition soon.
Although David Hussey’s men lost to the Sixers last time out, they can take huge confidence from their previous performance. They pushed the defending champions all the way, proving that they can compete with the BBL’s top teams.
Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars Prediction
I’m confident that Team Green will return to winning ways on Christmas Eve. After securing back-to-back wins over the Thunder, they showed great spirit in their narrow loss to the Sixers.
By contrast, the Hurricanes were totally outclassed in both of their matches against the Scorchers. Not only did they score 254 runs across the two meetings, but they also took just 12 wickets.
The Stars’ batting line-up has the potential to blow Hobart away. Alongside Maxwell and Russell, big-hitters like Marcus Stoinis, Joe Clarke, Nick Larkin, and Hilton Cartwright could punish the Hurricanes.
This is likely to be a close match, but I expect the Stars to come out on top. The Hurricanes have lost each of their previous two outings, so they will be low on confidence.
My Betting Pick for Hurricanes vs. Stars
Melbourne Stars to Win1.73
Backing the Stars feels like the right thing to do here. I can see the Hurricanes improving as the season progresses, but Team Green has more than enough firepower to dispatch Hobart.
