Hellas Verona vs. Roma – Serie A (September 19, 2021)
This game on Sunday brings together two clubs enjoying vastly different seasons so far. Hellas Verona currently occupies the relegation zone and has just sacked its head coach, while Roma sits at the top of the league after winning all three of its games.
Verona will be hoping for a new coach, but will find a rejuvenated Roma a tough proposition. Jose Mourinho has started the campaign in a bullish mood and is obviously loving being the center of attention once again.
Read on to find out the latest betting odds, team news, and how I think the game will go – including a betting pick.
Latest Betting Odds for Hellas Verona vs. Roma
It is no surprise that BetOnline makes Roma the odds on favorite to win this one – even with the game being held at the Bentegodi.
Verona has been poor so far and Roma’s new players have all hit the ground running. But this is an excellent chance for the home players to show the new boss what they can do.
The odds for the draw might be worth investigating.
Can Hellas Verona Turn Things Around?
This is Verona’s third consecutive season in the Italian top-flight, so maybe it should be cut a little slack when it comes to how it is performing.
I was impressed by the way it played last year and thought the Gialloblu might even sneak into the European places at one point. That didn’t happen in the end – but the signs seemed good for this season.
The club allowed the best players to leave, without really replacing them in any way – and Eusebio Di Francesco was brought in as head coach. He didn’t have the best managerial record in recent times and was sacked after the defeat to Bologna on Monday. Igor Tudor is the new man in the hot seat and faces the league leaders in his very first game.
But Tudor will thrive on that pressure – and I feel as though the players will step up to prove themselves. He will need to impose a steeliness to the defense that has been far too accommodating so far, especially compared to last season.
Although, he does have Miguel Veloso back in the middle after he missed the last two games because of suspension. Hellas Verona may still not score many, but it may be able to frustrate its opponent on Sunday.
Will Roma Win Yet Again?
Jose Mourinho celebrated Stephan El Shaarawy’s stoppage time winner against Sassuolo last week with typical understatement.
No, of course he didn’t.
Never one to shy away from turning the spotlight on himself, Mourinho ran the length of the pitch and celebrated with the players and fans behind the goal at the Stadio Olimpico. But, he could be forgiven for believing he deserves to be in the limelight again.
Roma has enjoyed a very successful transfer window and the new arrivals have all started well. Rui Patricio was probably the man of the match in the game at the weekend – and Tammy Abraham has begun to show why the Giallorossi paid around €40 million for his services. Roma is top of the league and everyone involved with the club is loving life at the moment.
It probably deserved to lose to Sassuolo and has had a very friendly run of fixtures to kick off the new season. We will see how Roma gets on when it faces the big boys of Serie A.
It might be a good idea to collect as many points as it can now, to act as a buffer for the rest of the season.
Hellas Verona vs. Roma Betting Pick
Hellas Verona has to improve at some point – and at what better time than when a new head coach takes over?
Igor Tudor has inherited a squad that may have lost a few key players, but can still be a tough opponent. The defensive record was one of the best in Serie A last season and it needs to step up again to halt the current slide.
Roma has looked good so far but has not been overly dominant – even though it has managed to win all three games so far. Mourinho may bring some kind of success back to the Stadio Olimpico but this is not a team that will win the scudetto.
It will struggle against sides that it is expected to beat. A hard-fought point might have to be enough for both sides on Sunday.
