Gwangju vs. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors – K League 1, September 12, 2020

It was a strange weekend in South Korea as the top two struggled in games that most people predicted as straightforward victories. Jeonbuk may have been let off slightly by Ulsan but there is still a gap at the top of the table now.

This trip south to Gwangju does not guarantee a points return either. The club promoted last year have improved recently and this could end up being a close-run thing.

Gwangju vs. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Odds

Gwangju to Win +498
The Draw +294
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to Win -169

League position and prestige, rather than recent form, has obviously been used by BetOnline to come up with these odds as Jeonbuk is in the rare position of not having won a single point in the last two games. Gwangju has drawn more than it has won though, so that might be an interesting bet here too.

Match Preview

Gwangju is unbeaten in six league games now – but there are a few things to note from that run of games before any home win bets are placed. The draw with Ulsan last weekend was an excellent result but it was the fourth draw in five games. That suggests a more defensive resolve than earlier in the season for the Yellows.

Other opponents in that time have included Daegu, Pohang and Gangwon so it is not as though Gwangju has been handed an easy run of games however. There is always the threat of Felipe up front when it comes to this team and if Jeonbuk is not careful the rangy Brazilian could add to his impressive goal tally here.

It is difficult to work out why Jeonbuk has suddenly started to lose games. The Green Warriors were not playing well earlier in the season but were still coming up with the vital victories. But form had picked up since the introduction of new players in the summer and it looked as though the champions would push Ulsan all the way for the title.

But back-to-back defeats to Gangwon and Seongnam were not expected and now Jeonbuk finds itself five points behind the Horangi at the top of the table. The game between the two in the middle of next week could decide the championship – but that is assuming that Gwangju won’t ruin the party this Saturday.

Prediction and Pick

  • The Draw

It is not like Jeonbuk to suddenly suffer from nerves at this stage of the season – it has won the last three championships after all. But those two defeats have really handed the impetus to Ulsan and that could be enough to decide the league this season. An unexpected draw here would certainly change the outlook at the summit.
