Gulfstream Park Picks – Saturday, December 19, 2020

| December 18, 2020 2:56 pm PDT

Gulfstream Park headlines two stakes races, including the Grade III Mr. Prospector Stakes and the ungraded Via Borghese Stakes, on its 11-race card for Saturday.

Remember that while I review Gulfstream Park’s three richest races for Saturday, you will find their entire 11-race card — including horses, jockeys, M/L odds, and wagering options — at one of our recommended online racebooks.

Read on for my Gulfstream Park picks and betting tips for Saturday, December 19, 2020.

Pick for Gulfstream Park Race 9 — Via Borghese Stakes

This is the Via Borghese Stakes, an ungraded stakes race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 1-3/16 miles on turf for a purse of $100,000.

I’m calling this one for the 5/2 morning line favorite — Always Shopping, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons. This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her 12 career starts, winning three — all of which were stakes races, including the Gazelle Stakes (Grade II) In Albuquerque in April 2019 at Aqueduct.

None of the longer-odds entries in this race look like they have a chance to see a paycheck at this finish line. Save your long money for later.

  •  Win: Always Shopping 5/2

Pick for Gulfstream Park Race 10 — Mr. Prospector Stakes

This is a Mr. Prospector Stakes, a Grade III stakes race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $100,000.

I have to stick with the 5/2 morning line favorite here, as well — Firenze Fire, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. This five-year-old has been winning graded stakes since the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga in 2017. For the record, Firenze Fire moneyed 18 of his 30 career starts, winning twelve of them (11 of which were stakes races).

On the value show-bet front, I see no long-odds entries here worth the risk of a show wager.

  •  Win: Firenze Fire 5/2

Pick for Gulfstream Park Race 11

This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $50,000.

My money is on the fourth-favored (5/1) Girl Dad, with Joe Bravo aboard. This gelding moneyed two of his four career starts.

Only one other horse in this 12-horse field has finished in the money — but the odds aren’t long enough (10/1) to make a show ticket worthwhile for He’spuregold, ridden by Junior Alvarado. You may feel differently, of course. For the record, this colt placed third in his single career start.

  •  Win: Girl Dad 5/1
