Golden Gate Fields Picks – Thursday, October 8, 2020
A baker’s half-dozen of maiden, claiming, and starter races fill the seven-race card at Golden Gate Fields today. While no spectators are allowed at the track, competitors and their connections can expect a partly cloudy day with temps in the mid-60s, a 20% chance of rain, and winds around 14 mph.
Read on for my Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Thursday’s three richest races.
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 3
This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs on all-weather track from a purse of $32,000.
There’s plenty of talent in this race, both on the ground and in the irons, but I’m backing the fourth-favored (9/2) Never for Money, ridden by veteran jockey Frank Alvarado. This three-year-old filly won both of her career starts, and I’m a firm believer in the old expression “nothing succeeds like success.”
- Win: Never for Money 9/2
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 6
This is a starter allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of five furlongs on turf for a purse of $17,000.
This will probably be the tightest race of the day, but I’m sticking with the 1/1 morning line favorite—Facts Matter, with top jockey Irving Orozco aboard. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 12 of his 22 career starts, winning eight of them.
At 20/1, Wink and a Dream, with Catalino Martinez in the irons, might be worth a show ticket. This three-year-old gelding performed poorly in 2019 but has improved considerably for 2020. It could happen.
- Win: Facts Matter 1/1
- Show: Wink and a Dream 20/1
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 7
This is a starter allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs on all-weather track for a purse of $19,000.
I’m backing the second-favored (7/2) entry here—Spun Away, ridden by Francisco Monroy. This three-year-old filly won both of her career starts. Yes, the morning line favorite has a more experienced jockey, but dragging a long string of non-paying finishes behind you is no way to win a race.
There are three 20/1 longshots in this race, and once again veteran jockey Frank Alvarado is aboard the one with real promise—Persuasive Lips. This three-year-old filly moneyed three of her six career starts, winning one of them.
- Win: Spun Away 7/2
- Show: Persuasive Lips 20/1
