Golden Gate Fields Picks – Friday, October 23, 2020

| October 22, 2020 3:08 pm PDT

Golden Gate Fields brings us nine maiden, starter, allowance, and claiming races for our end-of-the-week wagering.

Remember that Golden Gate Fields allows spectators, so take advantage of the great weather while you can: Highs in the low 70s, a slight chance of rain (10%) from partly cloudy skies, and winds around 11 mph.

Read on for my Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Friday’s three richest races.

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 2

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $31,000.

I’m going with the second-favored (2/1) entry in this race—Of Good Report, with Kyle Frey in the irons. This four-year-old gelding has an uneven record but has much better recent speed numbers than the morning line favorite. For the record, Of Good Report moneyed seven of his 19 career starts, winning five of them.

I don’t usually call a value show bet for anything lower than 10/1 M/L odds, but I firmly believe the 8/1 Descartes, ridden by veteran jockey Catalino Martinez, can pull a third-place finish against this field. This three-year-old gelding moneyed five of his 12 career starts, winning two.

  • Win: Of Good Report 2/1
  • Show: Descartes 8/1

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 3

This is a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $30,000.

I like the second-favored (2/1) entry in this race, as well—Perfect Stories, ridden by veteran jockey Frank T. Alvarado. This three-year-old filly moneyed both of her career starts.

I’m only slightly impressed with the 10/1 entry Smiling Spirit, with David C. Lopez aboard, but that’s enough to make me take a flyer on her. This five-year-old mare has no career starts on record, but her recent workouts show real possibilities for this race. Show ticket only.

  • Win: Perfect Stories 2/1
  • Show: Smiling Spirit 10/1

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 7

This is a starter allowance race for two-year-old fillies running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $19,000.

I’m going to stick with the 9/5 morning line favorite in this race—Gayles Evening, with Santos Rivera in the irons. This filly moneyed both of her career starts, winning one, and Rivera brings his proven skill—as well as a five-pound apprentice allowance—to the game.

At 10/1, House of Targaryen, with Irving Orozco aboard, is worth a show ticket. This filly moneyed both of her career starts( a first and a second).

  • Win: Gayles Evening 9/5
  • Show: House of Targaryen 10/1
