Golden Gate Fields Picks – Saturday, October 17, 2020

Golden Gate Fields continues to offer some good potential underdog upsets on its race card, and I manage to find a couple of underdogs and a solid show wager opportunity among the entries. Incidentally, no rain is predicted for today, improving the chances that the turf matches will remain on turf.
Let’s get right to my Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Saturday’s three richest races.
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 6
This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $32,000.
I like the morning line 8/5 favorite here—Give Me the Lute, with Irving Orozco in the irons. This four-year-old gelding moneyed six of his ten career starts, winning three of them.
At 15/1, I think More Power to Him, with veteran jockey Kevin Orozco aboard, is a solid show bet for this race. This six-year-old finished in the money 25 of his 45 career starts, winning six of them.
- Win: Give Me the Lute 8/5
- Show: More Power to Him 15/1
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 7
This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running 5-1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $30,000.
I like the second-favored (7/2) entry in this race–Champagne Pegasus, ridden by Catalino Martinez. This colt is more than just potential—he’s moneyed in four of his five career starts and has never run worse than fourth in any of his races.
There are two 20/1 longshots in this race, and they will almost certainly finish the race, but that’s the best I can say for either of them. Save your long money.
- Win: Champagne Pegasus 7/2
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 8
This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile on the all-weather track for a purse of $31,000.
My money is on the second-favored (5/2) entry here—Premium Forest, with Kyle Frey aboard. This five-year-old finished in the money 20 of his 29 career starts, winning 14 of them. His 2020 record alone is convincing: Five wins in six starts.
None of the longer-odds entries in this race look to accomplish much.
- Win: Premium Forest 5/2
