Golden Gate Fields Picks – Friday, February 5, 2021

Golden Gate Fields brings us eight maiden, starter, and claiming races for our early weekend wagering enjoyment. The three races I chose for review yielded a couple of underdogs sure to improve our attitudes as well as our bankrolls.
While Golden Gate Fields is currently closed to spectators, you can check out their complete eight-race card — including horses, jockeys, trainers, morning line odds, and wagering options — at one of our best horse racing betting sites.
Now, read on for my Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Friday’s richest races.
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 2
This is a starter allowance race for three-year-olds running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $19,000.
I like the third-favored (7/2) entry for the win in this five-horse race — Bourbonwithatwist, ridden by Assael Espinoza. This gelding won his single career start and has shown better performance in recent workouts than the morning line favorite.
- Win: Bourbonwithatwist 7/2
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 3
This is a maiden special weight race for California-bred or -sired three-year-olds running a distance of one mile on the all-weather track for a purse of $39,000.
I’m sticking with the 2/1morning line favorite for this run — Tribal Nation, with Evin Roman in the irons. This gelding moneyed two of his three career starts with second-place finishes at both Los Alamitos (December 2020) and Golden Gate (January 2021).
There’s only one long-odds entry in this race (12/1), and that horse doesn’t look likely to finish anywhere near the money, so save yours.
- Win: Tribal Nation 2/1
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 4
This is a claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $23,000.
I like one of the fourth-favored entries (there are two at 9/2 ) in this race — Ixtapa’s Finest, with Armando Ayuso aboard. This five-year-old mare has a better record than the morning line favorite — she’s finished in the money 13 of her 16 career starts, winning five.
The longest odds in this race are 10/1, but against this field, Tip Top Gal, ridden by Cristobal Herrera, has a realistic shot at a money finish. This five-year-old mare moneyed in six of her 17 career starts, winning three. Show ticket only.
- Win: Ixtapa’s Finest 9/2
- Show: Tip Top Gal 10/1
