Golden Gate Fields Picks – Saturday, February 13, 2021

Golden Gate Fields brings us nine regular maiden, allowance, and claiming races — all headlined by the El Camino Real Derby, a Listed stakes race that is also one of the whistle-stops along the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Remember that while I review the three top races here (including the El Camino Real Derby), you can find Golden Gate Fields’ full nine-race card for Saturday at one of our recommended online racebooks.
Read on for my Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Saturday’s richest races.
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 5
This is a claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile on the all-weather track for a purse of $23,000.
My money is on the fourth-favored (5/1) entry in this race — Klondike Creek, with Kevin Frey in the irons. This eight-year-old finished in the money 14 of his 20 career starts, winning five, including his latest two starts in October 2020 and January 2021, respectively.
I see no long-odds entries in this race, so no value show bet recommendation. Insert sad emoji here.
- Win: Klondike Creek 5/1
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 7
This is an allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of one mile on the all-weather track for a purse of $32,000.
My money’s on the 9/5 morning line favorite — Sadie Bluegrass, with Evin A. Roman aboard. This four-year-old filly moneyed nine of her ten career starts, winning six.
The longest odds in this run are 8/1, so no value show ticket here.
- Win: Sadie Bluegrass 9/5
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 8 — El Camino Real Derby
This is the El Camino Real Derby, a Listed stakes race for three-year-olds running a distance of 1-1/8 miles on the all-weather track for a purse of $100,000. The El Camino Real Derby is one of the prep races on the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby and awards scoring points to the top four finishers (10-4-2-1) that are tallied on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.
I’m calling this stakes race for the third-favored (3/1) entry — Petruchio, ridden by Irving Orozco. This gelding moneyed all five of his career starts, winning one. His latest success was a third-place finish in the Los Alamitos Futurity (Grade II) in December.
If you’re looking for a good value show ticket, forget that 50/1 entry and instead buy one for the 20/1 longshot It’s My House, with William Antongeorgi III aboard. This colt moneyed both of his career starts, winning one. Unlike that 50/1 longshot, It’s My House could actually happen.
- Win: Petruchio 3/1
- Show: It’s My House 20/1
