Golden Gate Fields Picks – Friday, August 28, 2020

| August 27, 2020 11:54 pm PDT

I see plenty of competition in the three allowance races I’m looking at for Golden Gate Fields today. You’ll find a few surprises, as well, with tighter competition than you might expect in these abbreviated fields. Race 3, for example, has five entries; the other two—races 5 and 7—have seven contenders each.

The weather predicted for Berkeley, California today is pretty much what you expect in northern California this time of year: Partly cloudy skies, slight chance of rain, and temps in the low 70s.

My Golden Gate Fields picks and betting tips for Friday are below.

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 3

This is an allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of one mile on the all-weather track for a purse of $33,000.

I see nothing to dissuade me from backing the heavy (6/5) morning line favorite in this long five-horse match-up: Ziarah, ridden by Frank T. Alvarado. This five-year-old mare finished in the money 19 of her 30 career starts, winning eight of them.

I do, however, question the odds on the rest of the field, and think that the 6/1 horse—Wicked Old Fashion, with Brayan Pena aboard—is more a contender for a money finish than the morning line suggests. This six-year-old mare moneyed 22 of her 31 starts, with 12 of those wins. Granted, most of her winning runs happened in 2019 or earlier, but she has moneyed in five of her eight 2020 starts. If she had a more experienced jockey, I’d bet her across the board, but life is full of disappointments.

  • Win: Ziarah 6/5
  • Show: Wicked Old Fashion 6/1

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 5

This is an allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running on turf a distance of five furlongs for a purse of $31,000.

I’m sticking with the morning line here as well and betting the 7/5 favorite, Songofthedesert, with Kyle Frey aboard. This five-year-old mare moneyed in 11 of her 17 career starts, winning six of them.

I think the 8/1 Sadie Bluegrass, ridden by Brayan Pena, is a shoo-in for a show ticket. This three-year-old filly moneyed five of her six career starts and won three of them.

  • Win: Songofthedesert 7/5
  • Show: Sadie Bluegrass 8/1

Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 7

This is an allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running on turf the distance of five furlongs for a purse of $31,000.

All four of the morning line’s top choices have top jockeys aboard, so I’m sticking with horse-power, and that seems to belong to the 2/1 favorite, Myangelcindy, with Frank T. Alvarado in the irons. This six-year-old mare finished in the money 16 of her 22 career starts, winning five of them.

There are three long-odds entries in this race, but for varying reasons, I can’t recommend even a show ticket on any of them. Let’s all agree to count the money we didn’t bet long here as a win, m’kay?

  • Win: Myangelcindy 2/1
