Golden Gate Fields Picks – Thursday, August 27, 2020
Golden Gate Fields presents a seven-race card of maiden, allowance, and claiming matches for Thursday, August 27, 2020.
The forecast for Berkeley, California on Thursday calls for partly cloudy skies and a 10% chance of rain, temperatures in the upper 60s, and winds around 13 mph.
My Golden Gate Fields picks for Thursday are below. Post time for the first race is 1:45 PM (PDT).
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 4
This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running on turf a distance of one mile for a purse of $31,000.
I’m sticking with the heavily-favored (8/5) Our Silver Oak, with Kyle Frey in the irons. The top four morning line favorites are all piloted by top jockeys, but Our Silver Oak—a four-year-old gelding—had plenty of statistics to back his popularity: Eight money finishes in 11 career starts, two of those wins.
No long odds in this five-horse race, but there’s a possible trifecta wager here in Our Silver Oak, Rustic Canyon, and Bronze Warrior. The latter two are ridden by David C. Lopez and Catalino Martinez, respectively.
- Win: Our Silver Oak 8/5
- Trifecta: Our Silver Oak, Rustic Canyon, Bronze Warrior (2-3-1)
Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 5
This is a claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $19,000.
This will be a tighter race than race 4, but I still believe the morning line’s 5/2 favorite will prevail: Brilliant Bird, with Catalino Martinez aboard. This five-year-old mare moneyed 15 of her 26 career starts, winning eight of them.
There’s one true longshot in this race that I believe deserves a show ticket: the 20/1 Just Classy, ridden by Pedro Flores. Despite her jockey’s less than impressive wins/WPS stats, this three-year-old filly has street cred to spare: She moneyed seven of her ten career starts and won four of them.
- Win: Brilliant Bird 5/2
- Show: Just Classy 20/1
Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 7
This is a starter allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs on the all-weather track for a purse of $19,000.
I’m going with the morning line 5/2 favorite here, as well: Midnight Sunrise, with Kyle Frey in the irons. This three-year-old filly finished in the money four of her seven career starts. She may see some surprise competition from the fourth-favored Stradari, piloted by Santos Rivera, but Midnight Sunrise should prevail.
On the long-odds front, this race has two entries at 10/1, but neither is worth the risk of even a show ticket.
- Win: Midnight Sunrise 5/2
