Golden Gate Fields Picks – Friday, August 21, 2020

| August 21, 2020 12:06 am PDT

Thoroughbred competition continues at Golden Gate Fields for Friday, August 21, 2020, with eight maiden, claiming, and allowance matches.

The Friday forecast for Berkeley, California says the skies will be partly cloudy with a 10% chance of rain, temps in the upper 70s, and winds around 14 mph.

While I cover the three richest races at Golden Gate Fields here, remember that you can always find the full slate of races—complete with entries, jockeys, and wagering options—at any of the best horse racing betting sites.

Post time for the first race at Golden Gate Fields on Friday is 1:45 PM (PDT). Now, let’s move on to my horse racing predictions, picks, and tips.

Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 3

This is a claiming race for three-year-olds running 5-1/2 furlongs on an all-weather track for a purse of $20,000.

I like the morning line’s second-favored (2/1) entry for this race: Foreign Protocol, ridden by Alejandro Gomez. This three-year-old gelding moneyed five of his 11 career starts, winning four of them.

I don’t see any longer-odds entries in this horse race worth risking even a show bet.

  • Win: Foreign Protocol 2/1

Picks for Golden Gate Fields Race 5

This is a claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $20,000.

For safety, I’ll stick with the morning line’s 2/1 favorite for this race: Novella, with Catalino Martinez aboard. This four-year-old filly moneyed eight of her 14 career starts, winning three of them.

Keep an eye on the 5/1 Buttie, piloted by William Antongeorgi III. This seven-year-old mare might be a sleeper—she finished in the money 27 of her 45 career starts and won 13 of them. Worth at least a show ticket if not an across-the-board, even in this field.

  • Win: Novella 2/1
  • Across the Board: Buttie 5/1

Pick for Golden Gate Fields Race 7

This is a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $30,000.

I like the morning line’s 2/1 favorite for this race: With Open Eyes, ridden by Evin A. Roman. This three-year-old filly moneyed both of her career starts.

Sadly, I see no hope for any of the actual longshots in this race, so at least we save money—and that’s a form of winning, right?

  • Win: With Open Eyes 2/1
