France vs. Ukraine – World Cup Qualifier, March 24, 2021

| March 24, 2021 10:09 am PDT

The European section of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification kicks off this week, with reigning world champions France hosting Ukraine on Wednesday.

Bosnia & Herzegovina, Finland, and Kazakhstan are also competing alongside France and Ukraine, so Les Blues are the bookmakers’ clear favorites to reign supreme in Group D.

After looking at the odds and assessing the teams’ chances, I will give my France vs. Ukraine prediction and pick.

France vs. Ukraine Odds

France to Win1.25
The Draw5.75
Ukraine to Win5.75

Well, it’s safe to say that the top online betting sites haven’t sprung any surprises with their odds for this matchup. As you would expect, France (1.25) heads into Wednesday’s clash as the overwhelming favorite, leaving Ukraine (9.75) as the rank outsider.

Before we get into my France vs. Ukraine betting pick, let’s take a look at both sides.

Previewing France vs. Ukraine

If France’s recent Nations League results are anything to go by, the reigning world champions will likely find World Cup qualification relatively straightforward.

Didier Deschamps’ men recorded five wins and one draw during the Nations League group stage towards the end of last year, seeing off Portugal, Croatia, and Sweden along the way.

As well as taking four points from a possible six against Portugal, Les Blues did the double over Croatia and Sweden in style. They even managed to score 12 goals across six games in a tricky group – averaging two goals per game.

For obvious reasons, there wasn’t much international soccer in 2020. However, France did face Ukraine in a friendly match. Remarkably, Deschamps’ side crushed Ukraine 7-1 back in October, with Olivier Giroud netting a brace.

Better still, Kylian Mbappe has bagged 30 goals and nine assists in 36 appearances for PSG this season. It goes without saying that Ukraine is likely to struggle against France’s free-flowing forward line for the second time in a matter of months.

In fairness, Ukraine enjoyed large spells of possession in their previous meeting. Andriy Shevchenko’s men even managed to notch up seven shots (three on target), but the world champs ultimately outclassed them.

Following October’s 7-1 thrashing, Ukraine’s record against France looks even worse.

The two nations have met ten times over the years, with Ukraine’s sole victory over France coming back in 2013. Other than that, Ukraine has registered six defeats and three draws in this fixture.

Given that Shevchenko’s men have lost six of their last seven games in all competitions, it is unlikely that they will be adding to the win column on Wednesday.

Ukraine lost 2-0 to Polland in November before suffering back-to-back 3-0 losses to Germany and Switzerland. Even if the visitors are at their best on Wednesday, they will still find it extremely difficult to avoid another heavy defeat.

France vs. Ukraine Pick

  • France to Win

Of course, the price for the home win isn’t worth getting too excited about. But when you take everything into consideration, backing France to beat Ukraine feels like a good opportunity to win some easy money.

When Ukraine traveled to Stade de France back in October, the manner with which Deschamps’ men tore through the visitors’ backline was pretty frightening. The result may not be as heavy this time around, but I still expect the same outcome.
