France vs. Switzerland – European Championship Round of 16, June 28 (2021)
This looks like being one of the more straightforward round of 16 ties, as the World Champions France take on a Switzerland side that only qualified for the knockout stages by finishing third in Group A.
France has not looked entirely convincing however, needing an own goal to beat Germany in the opening game and then drawing with both Hungary and Portugal. This game in Bucharest on Monday could end up being closer than some might think – and I’m going to preview the encounter and provide my own France vs. Switzerland betting pick.
Can France Improve From a Slow Start to Euro 2020?
It seems to strange to accuse France as beginning the tournament is a sluggish mood considering it topped the ‘Group of Death’ and now faces one of the weaker nations still left in the competition. But it did only win one game and has had to rely on own goals and penalties so far.
As you can see from the final group standings, France desperately needed the point from its last game against Portugal to finish top. For all the abundance of talent in Didier Deschamps’ squad, it is yet to really steamroll an opponent at Euro 2020. But perhaps that is a little unfair, considering the standard of opposition?
Paul Pogba has commanded the middle of the pitch and is constantly looking to unleash Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe up front. Antoine Griezmann has also impressed – especially with his defensive work. A big win against Switzerland will definitely make this team look more like the bookmakers’ favorite it is though.
Can Switzerland Upset the Odds Against France?
At first glance this looks like one of the more one-sided Euro 2020 round of 16 ties. Switzerland has quite a lot of form in qualifying from group stages at international tournaments and then flying straight home after the first knockout game. Euro 2020 does not look like it will change that pattern.
But Switzerland can point to being in the only group made up of four nations ranked in the top 30 in the world – and a comprehensive victory in the last game against Turkey to build on. Main man Xherdan Shaqiri starred in that game and will now fancy his chances against France.
- Switzerland 1 Wales 1
- Switzerland 0 Italy 3
- Switzerland 3 Turkey 1
Shaqiri will be the most important player for the Swiss as it attempts to rein in France on Monday. Although it is likely that the defense is busier in Bucharest, Shaqiri needs to make sure everything he does pays off. He has been the most influential player in the squad so far and is looked to as the one that can deliver on the big occasion.
France vs. Switzerland Odds and My Betting Pick
Only Austria has longer odds than Switzerland to win its round of 16 tie – and it would be a huge upset if France departed the tournament at this stage. Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic will surely send his players out to do a defensive job on Monday and hope that Shaqiri can engineer a chance for himself or the likes of Embolo and Seferovic on the counter attack.
But with Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba pulling the strings for France, I can’t see this finishing in anything but a win for Les Bleus. Kylian Mbappe has looked dangerous without quite finishing anything as yet – and I would not be surprised if he opens his goal account for Euro 2020 in a comprehensive victory over Switzerland on Monday.
