France vs. Portugal Betting Preview – Nations League, October 11, 2020
Possibly the most eagerly awaited game of the round, France versus Portugal promises to bring together some of the finest soccer players in Europe at the Stade de France on Sunday.
Barring injuries or withdrawals, fans can expect to see the likes of Mbappe, Griezmann, and Paul Pogba go up against Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix, and – of course – Cristiano Ronaldo.
France vs. Portugal Odds
France would be odds on to beat almost any other country in Paris, so it says something for Portugal that Betway prices the home side at just better than evens to win the three points. If everyone is fit, this is likely to be an evenly balanced game with a number of players on both sides able to change the outcome in an instant. The draw bet might be a safer option.
With many of these players involved in the latter stages of the Champions and Europa Leagues, there may be an element of fatigue in both squads, but France will look at the two wins already recorded in this competition as a good start to the season. Where Sweden was beaten down, the display against Croatia was more free-flowing, and manager Didier Deschamps will probably like to see that kind of effort once again.
The only team France seems to have had trouble with in recent times is Turkey, who managed a good pair of results that helped its own Euro 2020 qualification effort, but Portugal will be a tough test. The last time these two played each other, Portugal won and lifted the European Championship in 2016. So revenge could be on the French players’ minds.
That triumph was a long-awaited trophy win for only the latest of the golden generations that had promised much in the past for Portugal. Even Ronaldo was unable to inspire his team to repeat the feat two years later at the World Cup in Russia, and there have been a few curious results in the Nations League and European Championship qualification campaigns since then.
But Portugal has begun this Nations League group in a similar fashion, beating Sweden away from home and then putting four past a Croatia side well past its best. This is the big game in the group, though – and the result of Sunday’s encounter will go a long way in determining whether Portugal gets to defend its Nations League title that it won on home soil last year.
France vs. Portugal Prediction and Pick
With both sets of players just getting into their stride at their clubs, this game might have come too early in the season to bring out the very best in them. There will be keenly fought battles all over the pitch, but if the game is won by either team, it may well be an individual moment of brilliance from the likes of Kylian Mbappe or Cristiano Ronaldo. With so many games in such a short time, the draw could be just as likely, though.
