FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo – MLS, May 8, 2021

| May 7, 2021 7:48 am PDT

Dallas and Houston clash at Toyota Stadium for the first Texas Derby of the season on Saturday, May 8, with the two rivals locked on four points in the early Western Conference standings.

Both sides have registered one win, one draw, and one loss this year – making Saturday’s showdown all the more important.

Who will claim the Lone Star State bragging rights this time around? I try my best to foresee the match’s outcome in this FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo betting preview.

Below, I discuss the MLS odds, analyze the teams, and share my prediction and betting pick.

FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo Odds

FC Dallas to Win1.86
The Draw3.75
Houston Dynamo to Win3.75

There is no denying that Dallas has been the best team in Texas over the past few years, so it’s hardly surprising to see Luchi Gonzalez’s side as the favorite to win this one.

The Dynamo only managed to win one of their four meetings with Dallas last season, recording one draw and two defeats along the way. With that in mind, the price for the home win stands out here.

Before we get to my FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo prediction, let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Dallas is the Rightful Favorite

In the previous Texas Derby, Dallas claimed an easy 3-0 win over Houston. Of course, a lot has changed since October. But the Toros are expected to produce a similar result this weekend.

It’s fair to say that Dallas didn’t make the best of starts to 2021. Following a goalless draw with Colorado in Week 1, Gonzalez’s men were beaten 3-1 by San Jose. However, they secured an emphatic victory over Portland last weekend.

Andres Ricaurte opened the scoring against the Timbers, while goals from Jader Obrian and Bressan saw Dallas head into half-time with a 3-0 lead. After the break, Dante Sealy completed the route.

The Toros enjoyed 60% possession against Portland and even managed to limit the visitors to just two shots on target. Meanwhile, they were able to convert four of their six attempts on goal.

If Gonzalez’s men can carry their momentum into the Texas Derby, the Dynamo could struggle to compete.

Can Houston Cause an Upset?

When Houston beat the Quakes 2-1 on the opening weekend, things were looking up at BBVA Stadium. But since then, Tab Ramos’ men have only managed to claim one point from a possible six.

If it weren’t for Cristhian Paredes’s own goal, the Dynamo would have failed to score in their loss to Portland in Week 2.

The Timbers chalked up 23 shots at Providence Park while limiting Houston to three attempts on target.

Granted, Ramos’ men can take some confidence from their previous performance. I mean, snatching a point off Los Angeles FC isn’t easy, but the Dynamo ended up holding LAFC to a 1-1 draw.

Having said that, it is worth noting that Houston saw just 39% possession last weekend and struggled to cope with LAFC for large spells of the game.

Looking at the bigger picture, the Dynamo has only won two of their past 16 encounters with Dallas – suffering five defeats in the previous eight. That is not a pretty record for the orange side of Texas.

Dallas vs. Houston Prediction and Pick

  • FC Dallas to Win

Dallas and Houston have both made identical starts to the 2021 MLS season, taking four points from their first three games. But while the Dynamo’s win came back in Week 1, Dallas’ victory is still fresh in the memory.

The Toros were immense against Portland and thoroughly deserved to thrash Giovanni Savarese’s side, so Dallas should carry that momentum into Saturday’s showdown.

Even if Dallas wasn’t in good form, Houston’s dreadful Texas Derby record is difficult to ignore. For that reason, the home win is my FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo betting pick.
