FC Cincinnati vs. DC United Betting Preview – MLS, October 18, 2020

| October 15, 2020 1:11 pm PDT

The least glamorous MLS fixture this weekend sees the bottom two in the Eastern Conference go head-to-head. FC Cincinnati hosts DC United at Nippert Stadium on Sunday, October 18, with both sides in desperate need of the points.

DC is rock bottom of the division, although an impressive draw with second-place Philadelphia Union on Wednesday will have lifted the spirits of the struggling club. Cincinnati is four points ahead and comes into this clash on the back of a hugely impressive – and unexpected – victory over Columbus Crew.

I assess the bookies’ odds before giving my FC Cincinnati vs. DC United prediction and betting pick.

Latest Odds

FC Cincinnati FC to Win2.10
The Draw3.30
DC United to Win3.40

It is difficult to disagree with the top online soccer betting sites when it comes to the odds for this game. Both these teams have struggled throughout 2020, but it’s fair to say that Cincinnati (2.10) has shown more fight than DC (3.40).

I discuss both sides’ chances below.

Assessing the Teams’ Form

FC Cincinnati 2-1 Columbus Crew. Where did that result come from!?

The Orange & Blue snapped a four-game losing streak by getting the better of their Ohio rival on Wednesday. Yuya Kubo and Nick Hagglund got on the scoresheet as Cincinnati netted more than one goal in a single regular-season game for the very first time this year.

To say that Cincinnati’s previous result was a surprise would be a massive understatement. Jaap Stam’s men had only managed to win three of their 17 games before Wednesday’s shock performance, so it’s no real surprise they find themselves battling to avoid the MLS Wooden Spoon.

Still, the team has shown great resilience in sporadic spells this term. Indeed, draws with DC, Columbus, Chicago Fire, and Philly prove that Stam’s side is more than capable of preventing their opponents from scoring. But it is no secret that Cincinnati must improve offensively to stand any chance of making a late push for the play-off places.

Let’s not forget that DC is also going through an extremely tough period at the moment. The club parted ways with Ben Olsen last week following his ten-year stint at the helm, leaving interim head coach Chad Ashton with a colossal job on his hands.

The Black & Red’s record of two wins from 18 games tells you everything you need to know about how their campaign is going. Only Montreal Impact has conceded more Eastern Conference goals than DC in 2020, and the Washington outfit is also the joint-second lowest scorer in the division.

However, the team can take plenty of confidence from their 2-2 draw with Philly on Wednesday. In fact, DC was on course to win until Mark McKenzie netted a late equalizer for the Union. If Ashton’s men put in a similar performance on Sunday, they can definitely get something from the game.

Prediction and Pick

  • The Draw

I can see this game ending in a draw, simply because I don’t believe either team is good enough to win. Both sides have picked up numerous draws throughout the campaign, but they have lacked the cutting edge required to turn one point into three.

I think Cincinnati deserves the favorite tag here, but DC’s previous performance proved the bottom club is capable of troubling the top teams in the division. The points are likely to be shared on Sunday.
