4 Sleeper Picks for the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open – Longshots in La Jolla

| January 25, 2021 1:33 pm PDT

+6000 and +8000.

Those were the respective odds of the eventual PGA Tour winners in each of the last two weeks (Si Woo Kim at the American Express, Kevin Na at the Sony Open). Don’t forget that the Robert Streb and Brian Gay have won tournaments this season as even bigger longshots. So have Martin Laird and Hudson Swafford.

The idea that betting on the favorites is the only way to go is nonsense.

The way to capture upside is to take a flier on a few sleeper picks for the Farmers Insurance Open. That’s what I’ve done below.

Jason Kokrak +6600

First and foremost, Jason is comfortable at both courses at Torrey Pines. Kokrak finished 21st or better here in each of the last two years, and that was before he garnered a whole bunch of confidence from winning at Shadow Creek.

What Jason’s performance at the 2020 CJ Cup showed us is that when he’s playing well, he can hang with anybody in the world.

Long known as a top-tier ball-striker who bombs it off the tee, putting has quietly become one of Kokrak’s strengths.

Jason Kokrak Putting Stats in 2020-21
Statistic PGA Tour Rank
Putting from 5’ 7th
Putting from 10’-15’ 10th
Putting from 20’-25’ 12th
SG: Putting 14th
Total Putting 4th

Winning more golf tournaments should be on the horizon.

Ryan Palmer +6600

Ryan Palmer’s +4500 price tag at one of the best golf betting sites seemed decent until I spotted him sitting at +6600 at BetOnline. That’s simply too juicy of a number to pass by.

I referenced Kokrak being a good fit at Torrey Pines, well, Palmer is officially a horse for this course.

Year Result
2020 21st
2019 13th
2018 2nd*

* Lost in a Playoff

Worth noting, Palmer played in the final pairing on Sunday last year alongside Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy. Among the sleepers for the Farmers Insurance Open who have a genuine chance at giving you a sweat, Ryan’s near the top of the list.

Francesco Molinari +8000

The 2018 Champion Golfer of the Year has faded into oblivion – currently ranked 110th in the OWGR. In fact, “Franny” was the 130th-ranked golfer in the world (going into last week) before his first top-10 worldwide in nearly two years pushed him back in the right direction.

Looking closer at Molinari’s stats in La Quinta, the 38-year-old Italian was stout across the board and looks to be inching closer to reaching peak form. Now situated in the Golden State, the SoCal resident has the perfect opportunity to carry his positive vibes into La Jolla.

John Huh +15000

Going back to 2015, John Huh is a perfect 6-6 at Torrey Pines. Aside from not missing any cuts, Huh’s resume at this event includes a pair of top-10s and a host of quality finishes. In other words, John fits the bill as one of the Farmers Insurance Open sleeper picks to consider.

Remember, the former PGA Tour winner was sidelined with injury for much of 2020 and didn’t play from March-September. Since resuming play in October, Huh has is 5-5 with four top-25s.

John Huh Results Since the Restart in June 2020
Date Tournament Finish
1/21-1/24 The American Express T21
12/3-12/6 Mayakoba Golf Classic T20
11/19-11/22 RSM Classic T12
11/5-11/8 Houston Open T48
10/8-10/11 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open T19

Are you ready to lock in these Farmers Insurance Open sleepers? Keep in mind that while the North Course is still the easier of the two, it’s toughened up significantly since the Tom Weiskopf-led renovation in 2016.

With both the Saturday and Sunday rounds set to be contested on the South Course, we’ll get an early taste of what we could see pan out at the 2021 US Open. For more on the golf course and what to expect this week, check out the links below.
