Fair Grounds Race Course Picks – Thursday, January 7, 2021

| January 7, 2021 5:13 am PDT

Fair Grounds Race Course brings us nine maiden, starter, claiming, and allowance races for our late-week wagering pleasure.

Read on for my predictions for Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Fair Grounds Race Course.

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 2

This is a maiden special weight race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of about one mile on turf for a purse of $45,000.

I’m backing the third-favored (7/2) entry in this race — Tribute Galaxy, ridden by Brian J. Hernandez, Jr. This six-year-old mare began her racing career in just the past few months, but she has moneyed both of her starts (a third place at Evangeline last August and then a second-place finish at Delta Downs in December).

At 15/1, Lucky Harborage, with E. M. Murray in the irons, looks like a good value show wager against this field. This four-year-old filly moneyed three of her six career starts.

  • Win: Tribute Galaxy 7/2
  • Show: Lucky Harborage 15/1

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 4

This is an allowance optional claiming race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of about one mile on turf for a purse of $48,000.

My money is on the second-favored (9/5) entry here — Net a Bear, with Florent Geroux aboard. This five-year-old mare moneyed 13 of her 19 career starts, winning four. And these weren’t your run-of-the-mill starts — she moneyed six Black Type stakes races, winning three.

The longest odds in this seven-horse race are 12/1, and that makes a nice value show wager for us on Schiff’s Corner, ridden by Colby Hernandez. This four-year-old filly moneyed nine of her 12 career starts, winning three.

  • Win: Net a Bear 9/5
  • Show: Schiff’s Corner 12/1

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 8

This is a claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of about 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $24,000.

I’m going with the 3/1 morning line favorite in this race — On a Spree, with veteran jockey Florent Geroux aboard. This five-year-old gelding finished in the money for 11 of his 16 career starts, winning five.

The longest odds in this race are 10/1, and that entry is not likely to see the finish line through the cloud of dust kicked up by the other eight horses.

  • Win: On a Spree 3/1
