Fair Grounds Race Course Picks – Friday, January 29, 2021

| January 28, 2021 2:23 pm PDT

Fair Grounds Race Course starts the racing weekend with a nine-race card of maiden, starter, allowance, and claiming matches — all for our wagering enjoyment. I found surprise moneymakers, underdogs, and even a sleeper among the entries in the three richest races.

So, let’s not waste any time: Read on for my Fair Grounds Race Course picks and tips for Friday, January 29, 2021.

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 4

This is an allowance optional claiming race for Louisiana-bred four-year-olds and upward running a distance of about one mile on turf for a purse of $47,000.

I like the 7/2 morning line favorite for this turf race — Papa’s Boy, ridden by Marcelino Pedroza. This six-year-old gelding finished in the money nine of his 14 career starts, winning five of them.

If, for some reason, Papa’s Boy is scratched (a move to the main track, for instance), switch your win ticket to the also-eligible/MTO favorite (at 5/2) Social Afleet, with Colby Hernandez aboard. This four-year-old colt moneyed six of his 15 career starts, winning three of them.

The longest morning line odds in this race are 15/1, and those are not long enough to justify risking money on a show ticket.

  •  Win: Papa’s Boy 9/5 (if starts)
  •  Win: Social Afleet 5/2 (otherwise)

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 6

This is a claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of about 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $22,000.

If you follow my advice in this race, you’re going to have some money on Marcelino Pedroza, whichever horse he rides.

If the run stays on turf, you’ll be buying a show ticket on one of the four 12/1 entries in this field — Caramel Angel, with Pedroza aboard. This four-year-old gelding moneyed six of his 12 career starts, winning two.

Your win ticket, in this case, will be on the 7/2 morning line favorite — Bring Me a Check, with Brian J. Hernandez, Jr. in the irons. This four-year-old gelding moneyed eight of his 12 career starts, winning three.

However, if a scratch or a switch to the main track puts Pedroza aboard the also-eligible/MTO Gemo Rain (at 6/1), forget what I said about Bring Me a Check and bet Gemo Rain to win.

  •  Win: Gemo Rain 6/1 (if starts)
  •  Win: Bring Me a Check 7/2 (otherwise)
  •  Show: Caramel Angel 12/1 (if starts)

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 8

This is a claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of about one mile on turf for a purse of $24,000.

I like one of the second-favored entries (there are four at 6/1) in this race — Noble Egyptian, ridden by Adam Beschizza. This five-year-old moneyed eight of his 16 career starts, winning five.

I also found a sleeper at 8/1 in this race — Majestic Sign, with Roberto Morales in the irons. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 19 of his 27 career starts, winning seven.

The longest morning-line odds in this race are 12/1, and that isn’t going to happen, so save your long money for later.

  •  Win: Noble Egyptian 6/1
  •  Sleeper: Majestic Sign 8/1
