Fair Grounds Race Course Picks – Thursday, February 4, 2021

| February 3, 2021 2:42 pm PDT

Fair Grounds Race Course continues its thoroughbred racing week with a Thursday race-card filled with mostly claiming and maiden races. I review the three richest races and discover underdog prospects in all three.

I review the three top races here, but you can find Fair Grounds’ full nine-race card for Thursday — including horses, jockeys, trainers, M/L odds, and wagering options — at one of our best horse racing betting sites.

Read on for my Fair Grounds Race Course picks and tips for Thursday, February 4, 2021.

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 7

This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $55,000.

My money’s on the second-favored (7/2) entry in this race — Copa, ridden by Colby Hernandez. This colt moneyed two of his six career starts and has performed well in recent workouts. This won’t be a cakewalk — the morning line favorite has performed even better and at longer distances in recent workouts, but workouts are not races, and Copa has shown he has what it takes.

The longest odds in this seven-horse race are 8/1, so I have no value show wager recommendations.

  •  Win: Copa 7/2

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 8

This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of about 1-1/8 miles on turf for a purse of $50,000.

I like the second-favored (9/2) entry in this turf race — Jungle Cat, ridden by Adam Beschizza. This filly moneyed all three of her career starts, which makes her the front-runner here.

If, for some reason, Jungle Cat is scratched and the 4/1 also-eligible/MTO entry Empress Catherine starts, bet her to win. This filly didn’t money in any of her three starts, but her performance in recent workouts at longer distances has been good.

The longest odds in this race are 12/1, and that horse is not likely to see a paycheck at the finish line, not against this field.

  •  Win: Jungle Cat 9/2 (if starts)
  •  Win: Empress Catherine 4/1 (otherwise, if starts)

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 9

This is an allowance race for Louisiana-bred four-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $56,000.

I’m backing the second-favored (3/1) entry here — Soul Song, with James Graham in the irons. This four-year-old colt finished in the money five of his eight career starts, winning three.

There are plenty of long-odds entries in this race, but unfortunately, I don’t see a single one with the stats to indicate a possible money finish here.

  •  Win: Soul Song 3/1
