Fair Grounds Race Course Betting Picks – Thursday, February 18, 2021

| February 17, 2021 2:43 pm PDT

The majority of Thursday’s nine races at Fair Grounds are on the main track, but the richest races, i.e., those offering the biggest purses, are all on turf.

And two of those are maiden races, with fields full of good horses with lots of potential and painfully meager racing histories — all serving to make handicapping a challenge, but by no means impossible.

Read on for my Fair Grounds Race Course picks and tips for Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 2

This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of about 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $50,000.

My money is on the 2/1 morning line favorite–Summer Palace, ridden by Adam Beschizza. This four-year-old gelding moneyed five of his six career starts.

If this race moves from turf to the main track, however, and Summer Palace doesn’t start, I’d move that win bet to the 7/2 also-eligible/MTO entry: Treasury, with Mitch Murrill aboard. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money two of his six career starts.

I see no long odds entries in this race likely to finish in the money, so let’s save ours.

  •  Win: Summer Palace 2/1 (if starts)
  •  Win: Treasury 7/2 (otherwise, if starts)

Fair Grounds Race Course Picks for Race 6

This is a claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of about one mile on turf for a purse of $24,000.

If this race stays on the grass, my money is on the 7/2 turf favorite — Maraud, with Miguel Mena in the irons. This six-year-old moneyed 12 of his 20 career starts, winning four.

If the race moves to the dirt track, however, switch that bet to the 3/1 entry, Woman With a Book, with James Graham aboard. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 12 of his 22 career starts, winning six.

At 15/1, Majestic Sign, with Roberto Morales in the irons, is my recommendation for a value show wager. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 19 of his 28 career starts, winning seven. You might even consider an across-the-board wager here, but I’m just backing touting the show ticket.

  •  Win: Woman With a Book 3/1 (if starts)
  •  Win: Maraud 7/2 (otherwise)
  •  Show: Majestic Sign 15/1

Fair Grounds Race Course Pick for Race 8

This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of about 5-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $50,000.

My money is on one of the fourth-favored entries (there are five horses at 8/1) in this race — Citizen West, ridden by Marcelino Pedroza. This four-year-old colt finished in the money two of his three career starts and has performed well in recent workouts.

As far as value show bets are concerned, I don’t see any longer-odds entries in this race likely to get to the finish line in time for payday.

  •  Win: Citizen West 8/1
