Picks for the Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 – Xfinity Series (2022)

| July 20, 2022 9:30 am PDT

My NASCAR picks for the Xfinity Series continued our hot streak last week. Justin Allgaier wasn’t my top pick, but he was among my top contenders. Allgaier scored his third victory of 2022 and first at New Hampshire.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series makes its lone trip to Pocono Raceway for the Explore the Pocono Mountains 225. The unique three-turn track should lead to another exciting Xfinity Series race.

Which drivers will have a place in your Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 predictions? Here are my NASCAR betting picks.

Ty Gibbs (+400)

Ty Gibbs dealt with inconsistency early in the 2022 season, but we’re seeing strong performances from the 19-year-old. Gibbs has finished seventh or better in four of his last six races.

He has back-to-back finishes outside the top 20, but he led laps in both races. A crash at Atlanta and mechanical issues at New Hampshire ruined a pair of quality runs. My free Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 picks believe we’ll see a bounce-back finish.

Last season marked Gibbs’ first Xfinity Series start at Pocono. He was a top contender throughout the race.

  • Starting Position: 14th
  • Finishing Position: 2nd
  • Laps Led: 11 of 90
  • Average Running Position: 7.0 (2nd)
  • Driver Rating: 118.0 (3rd)

Gibbs started 14th, but he quickly made his way to the front. He won Stage 2 while battling with Austin Cindric. Gibbs couldn’t track him down, finishing 0.331 seconds behind Cindric.

The Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 odds value that performance, as Gibbs opens as the favorite. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, as he leads the Xfinity Series with four wins in 2022.

Will he capture his first Pocono victory? My NASCAR predictions believe we’ll see a strong performance.

Cole Custer (+700)

Cole Custer returns to the Xfinity Series for his fourth start of the season. Custer kicked off the season with an impressive victory at Auto Club. He followed that up with a third-place finish at COTA. Custer was on pace for a strong finish at Road America before a late crash.

The 07 car hasn’t been great in 2022, but it has speed with Custer behind the wheel. I expect the same at Pocono.

His last Pocono start in the Xfinity Series was 2019. Custer lost the lead on the final restart but responded with a thrilling last-lap pass.

That wasn’t his only strong performance at Pocono. He finished seventh or better in his three Xfinity Series starts. Custer also led 14+ laps in each race. Do you see why my NASCAR predictions have him as a top contender?

The sportsbooks recognize his Pocono success. You wouldn’t see another driver in the 07 car open with (+700) odds. Custer has shown speed in the car.

Custer has had a tough season in the Cup Series. A great performance in the Xfinity Series could lead to momentum on the Cup side. Will he have another great Pocono performance?

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (+900)

Cole Custer isn’t the only Cup Series driver in the Xfinity Series. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. returns to the Xfinity Series for the first time since 2016. The two-time Xfinity Series Champion will drive the No. 48 for Big Machine Racing.

The Xfinity Series didn’t start racing at Pocono until 2016, so Stenhouse has never raced at the track in the Xfinity Series. He has plenty of experience, with 19 starts in the Cup Series.

He has had little success at Pocono, but he makes my NASCAR betting picks because of his car. Check out the best finishes for the No. 48 in 2022.

  • Jade Buford (COTA): 8th
  • Tyler Reddick (Texas): 1st
  • Tyler Reddick (Atlanta): 4th
  • Ty Dillon (New Hampshire): 6th

Reddick earned the team their first victory at Texas. They enter Pocono with back-to-back finishes of sixth or better. The Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 betting odds have faith in another strong performance with Stenhouse behind the wheel.

Like Custer, Stenhouse could use momentum for the Cup Series. He enters this weekend with six straight finishes outside the top 15.

My Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 predictions have Stenhouse as a top contender.

A.J Allmendinger (+1200)

I didn’t expect A.J. Allmendinger to open with (+1200) odds. A driver of his talent should be lower than (+1000), but I have no issue with his value. Your NASCAR betting picks should find a spot for Allmendinger.

Allmendinger had a strong run in last week’s race, finishing third in both stages. Unfortunately, a crash in the final 60 laps led to a 20th-place finish.

Like Ty Gibbs, last year was his first start at Pocono in the Xfinity Series. Allmendinger had no issue in his first start, producing a strong finish.

  • Starting Position: 3rd
  • Finishing Position: 5th
  • Average Running Position: 9.0 (6th)
  • Driver Rating: 101.5 (6th)

Allmendinger didn’t have the fastest car, but he was in contention. Hopefully, we’ll see a little better performance in 2022.

Lately, Allmendinger hasn’t been as consistent. He has finished 10th or worse in five of his last six races. He led 25+ laps at Nashville and Atlanta but had a disappointing finish. It’s only a matter of time before he wins on a non-road course.

It’s tough to pass on Allmendinger with (+1200) odds. He might not have the fastest car, but there’s enough value to justify the selection.

2022 Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 Prop Bets

It was a disappointing performance for my prop bets at New Hampshire. William Byron had the speed for a top-three finish, but a mechanical issue ruined his day.

Check out my favorite prop bets for Pocono.

Brandon Jones Over Sammy Smith (-120)

My favorite driver matchup prop features a pair of Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. Brandon Jones is a veteran of the Xfinity Series, while 18-year-old Sammy Smith makes his second career start.

Smith had a solid performance in his first start, but an engine issue led to a disappointing performance. He has been great in the ARCA Menards Series, but it’ll be tough to finish ahead of Jones.

Jones’ Pocono numbers have been terrible, with four finishes outside the top 20. However, he crashed in three of the four races. His other three starts include a pair of top 10 finishes. Jones also has a Truck Series win at Pocono.

Can he avoid a crash? That’ll be the key to finishing ahead of Smith. The No. 18 car has been strong in 2022, but Smith’s inexperience has me taking Jones in this matchup.

Justin Allgaier to Finish Top 3 (+130)

Justin Allgaier is the hottest driver in the Xfinity Series. He has finished seventh or better in eight of his last nine races, including a trio of victories. My expert Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 picks had to find a spot for Allgaier.

Allgaier’s Pocono numbers align with his 2022 success. He crashed out of two races, but check out his finishes in his other four Pocono starts.

  • 2017: 2nd
  • 2019: 11th
  • 2020: 6th
  • 2021: 3rd

Allgaier has led 9+ laps in each race. That should scare the competition, as he’s the best driver in the Xfinity Series. I don’t know if anything can slow him down.

I wouldn’t fault you if you picked Allgaier to win Saturday’s race. I’m taking the safer approach with a top-three finish. There’s value for a driver with four top-three finishes in his last nine races.

Myatt Snider to Finish Top 5 (+2500)

How often can you find a top-five prop with (+2500) odds? Typically, those aren’t realistic, but I could see Myatt Snider scoring a top-five finish at Pocono.

Snider has taken a step back in his first season with Jordan Anderson Racing, but he has three top 10 finishes. He has crashed in two of his last three races, ruining a solid performance. His Pocono numbers suggest we’ll see a strong finish.

  • 2020: 4th
  • 2021: 10th

He had one of the best cars in the 2020 race. Snider’s 5.0 average running position was second-best, while his driver rating ranked fourth. He wasn’t as strong last year, but he scored a solid 10th-place finish.

We often see strategy come into play at Pocono. Snider may not have top-five speed, but strategy could propel him to a strong finish.

Who Will Win the Explore the Pocono Mountains 225?

My Pick: Cole Custer (+700)Bet on Xfinity Series Racing at Bovada

Cole Custer has been a surprise contender in his three Xfinity Series starts. He would have three top-five finishes if not for a late crash at Road America.

My Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 predictions have Custer in victory lane because of his Pocono success in the Xfinity Series. It aligns with his 2022 Xfinity Series success. A big win should build momentum for the Cup Series.

Feel free to watch Saturday’s race at 5 p.m. ET on USA Network. Check out the top NASCAR betting sites to make your pick.
