Evil Geniuses vs. FURIA Betting Preview – August 28th, 2020

| August 28, 2020 12:52 am PDT

That’s the one we’ve all been waiting for!

Evil Geniuses and FURIA will look horns in one of the semi-finals of the ESL One: Cologne event and it promises to be a thrilling encounter.

The two most high-ranked teams in the North American division will meet up for the first time since the one-month hiatus and in this post, I present you my Evil Geniuses vs. FURIA pick which is based on the value of the current odds and the team’s most recent form.

Evil Geniuses vs. FURIA Odds

Let’s start off with the prices for the main markets. The ones below are taken from SportsBetting.ag:

Match Winner

Evil Geniuses -179
FURIA +139

Maps Handicap

Evil Geniuses (-1.5) +178
FURIA (+1.5) -233

Maps Total

Over 2.5 -102
Under 2.5 -125

EG has been relentless since the start of the tournament and despite the fact FURIA has been involved in more competitive action lately, it’s no surprise that their opponents are given the nod here.

However, it’s never a good idea to write off the Brazilians in these matchups, so let’s take a look at both teams and figure out what is the best way to approach the betting angle.

Evil Geniuses

The break didn’t come at the best of times for EG as they were simply flying.

The improved tactical arsenal of captain stanislaw and the form key pieces Brehze and CeRq were showing led the team to the 3rd seed in the world rankings and the title at the cs_summit 6 event.

It was difficult to predict whether the players will be able to pick up where they left off but their opening two games at the ESL One: Cologne were further proof that this is the most deadly roster on the North American scene right now.

Beating the struggling Triumph was an inevitability but the way EG gunned down the new-look Team Liquid in the second round was something to behold.

The guys are playing with purpose and they seem ready to cement themselves at the top of the rankings.

This next matchup will be a huge test but they will more than fancy their chances after the form they’ve displayed so far.

The Brazilians started the event on the wrong foot after allowing Chaos to run riot in their opening fixture.

Despite the disappointment, FURIA picked themselves up and their performance against Gen.G in the elimination match was a true CS:GO lecture.

The team controlled proceedings during the entire series and their tactics were spot on in both the terrorist and counter-terrorists rounds.

The win gave them the confidence to start well against 100 Thieves in the next round and they quickly wrapped up a 16:1 win on Inferno.

However, then came another slump which allowed the Australians to beat FURIA on their map pick Mirage.

Captain arT and his teammates did find the resources to get back and wrap up the decider on Vertigo but the ups and downs they had during the tie are a worrying sign.

The team will rely on their positive playoff record but it’s evident that they are struggling with their consistency right now and against Evil Geniuses there will be very little margin for mistake.

Prediction and Betting Pick

The stakes will be high and unless one of the teams completely falters this should go down to the wire.

The Geniuses have shown no signs of slowing down since their return to action but we must acknowledge the fact that they’ve played only two games and we may expect a bit of rustiness in the decisive moments.

On the other hand, FURIA has had their problems as well and despite the fact they usually get their game going in the advanced stages of tournaments, there is a good chance that the pressure will get to the players in their current mental state.

I believe Evil Geniuses are rightfully the favorites here but am more inclined to back a three-round game.

The odds of -102 give you great value given the circumstances and this was the outcome in three of the last four meetings between the organizations so that’s where my money is going.
