EuroLeague Round 16 Predictions and Picks for Friday, December 17

| December 16, 2021 10:50 am PDT

The second day of Round 16 of the EuroLeague is on the program on Friday, December 17. There are five games on the program that day, namely the following:

  • UNICS Kazan vs. Zalgiris Kaunas
  • Alba Berlin vs. CSKA Moscow
  • Monaco vs. Zenit Petersburg
  • Olympiacos vs. ASVEL Lyon
  • Crvena Zvezda vs. Bayern Munich

I will now preview three of those matchups, as well as share with you my betting picks for the remaining two.

UNICS Kazan to Beat Zalgiris Kaunas

UNICS Kazan obliterated CSKA Moscow two days ago. They beat their Russian rival in the country’s capital 88-67, which was one of the biggest defeats for the Moscowites in years.

UNICS players were superb in the offense, especially when it came to 3-pointers. They scored 15 of them, with Isaiah Canaan and O.J. Mayo scoring four each. Despite that, neither of them was UNICS scoring leader in that game. Instead, it was Mario Hezonja who scored 18 points. In addition, he was also their rebound leader in the game, with 10 rebounds.

For UNICS, the win in Moscow was one in a series of fantastic results. It was their fourth straight win. they entered the winning series after an overtime loss to Olympiacos in their first game of the month. Before that, we saw UNICS winning six straight games in November. Thanks to their superb run, they’re now flying high both in the Russian VTB League and in the EuroLeague.

Speaking of the EuroLeague, they’re currently in the #5 position in the continental championship with a 9-6 record. They could get even higher in the standings with a win on Friday.

The next item on UNICS’ fixture list is Zalgiris Kaunas. The Lithuanian team is 3-12 in the EuroLeague and is sitting at the very bottom of the table. This explains why the odds on UNICS are as short as 1.25 at most online sportsbooks.

That does sound too short, which is why betting on UNCIS to cover the spread surely seems like a much better option.

CSKA Moscow to Beat Alba Berlin

CSKA suffered a humiliating defeat two days ago, but the Russian team now has a chance to bounce back with a win over Alba Berlin.

The good news for the Russians is that they’re taking on a team that’s completely out of form. Alba Berlin is coming off three straight losses, two of which happened in the EuroLeague.

Further, the team from the German capital also has some issues with injuries, most notably the one that hit one of their leading scorers, American forward, Luke Sikma.

On the bright side for Germans, the game is played on their turf, which is where they won three games in the 2021-22 EuroLeague. Only two of their EuroLeague wins happened on the road.

Knowing all this, it’s only logical to assume CSKA will win on Friday. Unfortunately, oddsmakers think the same, which is why they’re giving very short odds on the Russians. Maybe spread betting would be a better choice in this case?

I think it might be. I think we could see a blowout win for CSKA. The reason isn’t just that they’re motivated to rebound after a huge loss; it’s also because Alba Berlin looks like the kind of opponent they love.

The thing is that CSKA is superb in the offense, with a total of 1188 points in 15 games, which makes them one of the top five teams in that aspect. On Friday, they’re taking on a team that’s horrible in the defense. Alba Berlin has conceded 1201 points so far, which is third-worst in the league.

Olympiacos to Beat ASVEL Lyon

The French champion is coming to Greece after four straight losses. The most recent of those was a home defeat to Zenit Petersburg in the EuroLeague two days ago. Olympiacos, meanwhile, is coming off a big win over Bayern at home.

The 83-60 win on Tuesday was Olympiacos’ eighth home win in the EuroLeague this season. This makes them one of only three teams in this competition that are still undefeated on home turf. Will they remain undefeated in Athens after Round 16?

Very likely! The Greeks simply have better players than ASVEL. Plus, they have the motivation to give their utmost in this game.

The thing is that Olympiacos is currently sitting in the #3 position in the EuroLeague with just two wins fewer than the second-placed Real Madrid. They’re also three wins behind Barcelona, the team from the very top of the table.

What all this means is that with a little bit of luck, Olympiacos could get to the #1 position even before the end of the year.

Picks for the Remaining Two EuroLeague Round 16 Games

  • Zenit Petersburg to Beat Monaco
  • Crvena Zvezda to Beat Bayern

Both of these games will probably be very, very close. Still, if I had to bet on them, I’d pick Zenit Petersburg and Crvena Zvezda.

The reason why I think Zenit will win on Friday is that Monaco is struggling a lot. This team did win the previous game, but they did it against Zalgiris after overtime.

I think Crvena Zvezda will defeat Bayern because the Serbian team is usually great when playing home. Sure, they’re coming off a home defeat on Tuesday, but it happened against mighty Barcelona.

Best EuroLeague Bets for Friday, December 17

UNICS Kazan (-9) against Zalgiris Kaunas1.87
CSKA Moscow (-7.5) against Alba Berlin1.91
Olympiacos (-9.5) against ASVEL Lyon1.91

So, those are my top picks for the final day of EuroLeague’s Round 16. If you like them, and you like the odds, why not head to and do some betting!
