England vs. Denmark – Euro 2020 Semifinal

England was one of the favorites for this delayed Euro 2020 – and now it is just one game (to be played at its own Wembley Stadium) from reaching the final. Without conceding a single goal during the tournament, there is still a feeling in England that football really is coming home.

But it now faces everyone’s new second favorite team.

England has now played its only game away from London as it marches on towards the Euro 2020 final. Playing at Wembley has been an obvious advantage to Gareth Southgate’s team, but it has shown much greater steeliness than expected to get this far.

The head coach was criticized for being ‘too defensive,’ but his side is yet to concede, and the attacking players have done their job when required.

Sancho was given his first start in what turned into a very comfortable victory over Ukraine on Saturday, and he will probably retain his place even though Saka has shrugged off the knock that kept him out of that game. If the England defensive unit can perform once again, it looks as though the Three Lions will be playing in their first major final since 1966.

Denmark was probably fancied to make it out of its group and exit this tournament around the round of 16 stage. But after the near-tragedy of its opening game, the Danes have rallied around and shown incredible determination and spirit to overcome Wales and the Czech Republic in the knockout stages.

Damsgaard, Eriksen’s replacement in the team, has been a revelation upfront and was a major factor in the victory of the Czechs. Now he will have a chance to run against England’s defenders. Much will be decided on whether the likes of Maguire and Shaw can deal with the tricky Sampdoria midfielder.

He will be up against Walker – possibly the weak link in the England side – and his success could also play a major part in any Denmark victory.

The way Denmark has played at this European Championship certainly makes the price at BetOnline a tempting offer. But it isn’t easy to see past England winning at home, even though Southgate’s side is odds on with the bookmaker.

Denmark is likely to test the England defense in a way that neither Germany nor Ukraine managed in the last two games. I feel as though Rice and Phillips will have a tougher time than usual – and Damsgaard and Maehle’s movement might open up the play enough for someone like Dolberg to score against England for the first time at Euro 2020.

But England has its own dynamic attacking group, with plenty more on the bench ready to come on if the first choice selection doesn’t work. Kane has been nowhere near as influential as in previous games but can still benefit from the talent of the likes of Sterling, so he is still a danger too.

Football isn’t coming home quite yet – and Italy or Spain will be a major obstacle in the final – but I think England will be victorious in a very hard-fought game on Wednesday and help its fans believe that Euro 2020 could be won.
