England vs. Belgium – Nations League, October 11, 2020

| October 6, 2020 11:28 am PDT

After the highs of the World Cup in Russia, Gareth Southgate is beginning to find the England job a little harder and will be hoping for improved performance on Sunday as his side takes on Belgium at Wembley on Sunday.

A friendly against Wales comes a few days before, and a good win is probably needed to quieten down Southgate’s critics ahead of what will be a very tough game.

When these two met in that semi-final in Russia two years ago, Belgium was the better team and continues to be considered one of the best in the world. Betway sees this as an evenly balanced game with England, the slight favorite. But the Red Devils have started this campaign far more impressively, and the away win could be the way to go.

England vs. Belgium Preview

Gareth Southgate is starting to discover the more difficult side to being the England manager. The heady days of Russia 2018 are long gone, and now the likable coach is dealing with criticism from the national media and players breaching regulations on trips abroad. Even more, worrying for England is that the first two games in the group were far from impressive.

It took an injury-time penalty from Raheem Sterling to beat Iceland in Reykjavik after the hosts had missed a spot-kick of their own – and the goalless draw with Denmark just days later is probably best forgotten. Sterling will miss the game against Belgium, and Southgate will be hoping that Harry Kane will be able to find his scoring boots and help generate some more favorable headlines for his team.

Belgium, on the other hand, has started the season off where it left off. After winning all ten Euro 2020 qualifying games, Roberto Martinez’s side swept aside Denmark in Copenhagen before thrashing Iceland 5-1 at home. The goals have already been spread around the squad, and top scorer Romelu Lukaku hasn’t even added to his record-breaking tally yet.

If he is selected, Lukaku would dearly love to find the net against England after leaving the EPL to play for Inter last year. There is a huge amount of team spirit in the Belgium squad – exemplified by Eden Hazard refusing to comply with Real Madrid’s demands that he stayed at home for the opening two Nations League games because of injury. Gareth Southgate and England could be in for a rough few days.

Prediction and Pick

  • Belgium to Win

Belgium has now not lost a game since November 2018 and fully deserves its position as number one in the world according to the latest FIFA rankings. England seems to be struggling to recapture the form of a few years ago and may find this one tough after what is likely to be a well-fought game with Wales just days earlier. Backing Belgium to continue its remarkable winning streak looks like a good idea here.
