Energetik-BGU vs. Smolevichi Pick – Belarusian Premier League, August 22, 2020

| August 20, 2020 3:04 am PDT

This looks like an ideal opportunity for Energetik-BGU to put some very poor results behind it and stake a claim for a European place again this season.

Smolevichi’s minor blip of wins and draws seem to be well and truly behind it as the club has dropped to the bottom of the league.

Latest Odds

Energetik-BGU to Win -250
The Draw +328
Smolevichi to Win +548

Energetik-BGU being named as the odds on favorite here just shows how poor Smolevichi has been these season. The Students have not won in five games themselves, but MyBookie is still convinced that Smolevichi will not be able to compete on Saturday.

Match Preview

The free-flowing soccer that Energetik-BGU showed in the early months of the season won the club a lot of new fans and admirers – but the last few games have been a real struggle for the Minsk club. No wins in five has seen a large point gap grow between the team and the top three.

But there is a sense that things are changing for the better. The last two games have ended in draws, including one against Neman Grodno – a team that has been looking most likely to crash the Shakhtyor/BATE party at the top of the Belarusian Premier League. Three points will be expected on Saturday.

That’s because Smolevichi is definitely moving in the other direction. For a while it seemed as though it would be the more successful promoted club. But losing a manager and the majority of its better players has not helped with the plan of staying up for longer than this season.

The 3-0 defeat at home to Belshina was a real kick in the teeth for the club and dropped Smolevichi to the bottom of the table. It is difficult to see how it will finish anywhere but that now. Three defeats in a row – with no goals scored – does not inspire much confidence unfortunately.

Prediction and Betting Pick

Some of the defending shown by Energetik-BGU in recent weeks has been absolutely woeful – and the fans will still be having nightmares about that 8-1 loss to Rukh Brest. But things are slowly improving and the home side should have no difficulty dispatching a despondent Smolevichi this weekend.
