Elina Svitolina vs. Nadia Podorska – French Open, October 6, 2020

| October 5, 2020 1:10 am PDT

Most of the big guns in the 2020 French Open women’s singles are out and the tournament looks wide open right now. One of the players that could certainly take advantage of the situation is Elina Svitolina.

The Ukrainian is still looking for her first Grand Slam title and this might be one of her best chances to get it. Svitolina has to go through Nadia Podorska next and the Argentinian’s remarkable journey started all the way back in the qualifiers!

I share my thoughts on both players in this Elina Svitolina vs. Nadia Podorska betting preview of the upcoming match. The post includes the latest odds, my prediction, and a betting pick.

Elina Svitolina Player Profile

There’s little doubt that Elina Svitolina is one of the best players left in the 2020 French Open. The Ukrainian lost only set in her four matches so far and looked strong for most of her time at the court.

The victory over Caroline Garcia in the fourth round was especially impressive and suggests that Svitolina might be hitting top form right when it matters the most.

The world number five has failed in the late stages of Grand Slams before in her career, but it usually happened against top opponents. This time around Svitolina is the highest ranked player left in the tournament, so she should have the confidence to go all the way.

The only potential problem I see is her relatively inconsistent serve. It’s the reason why Svitolina lost the second set against Renata Zarazua 6-0 and she can’t afford another blip like that or her hopes for a maiden major might be over.

Nadia Podorska Player Profile

This is only the second time Nadia Podorska has reached the main draw of Grand Slam tournament and she’s having the time of her life. The Argentinian started from the qualifiers and fought her way here after several impressive victories.

Podorska is a specialist on clay, but she would usually showcase her talents in ITF tournaments. She has managed to keep her first over 70% for most of the tournament so far which is one of the main reasons why Podorska is in the quarterfinals.

The question here is if she can put Svitolina under enough pressure because the Ukrainian can dismantle her opponent with ease if she intends to just sit back and defend.

Svitolina vs. Podorska Betting Pick

I don’t think that Podorska can apply the necessary aggression to beat Svitolina on Tuesday. The favorite has more weapons in her arsenal and unless she collapses big time, the world number 5 should be able to win this match and cover the -4.5 games handicap.

  • Svitolina (-4.5)
