Ecuador vs. Peru – 2021 Copa America (June 23)

| June 22, 2021 11:08 am PDT

Neighbors Ecuador and Peru meet on Wednesday at the Pedro Ludovico in Goiania in what looks like a crucial game for both sides. Although four out of the five nations in the Zona Norte will go through to the quarterfinals, defeat for either team could make for a nervous final fixture.

I’m going to look at the game, the latest odds, and provide my own Copa America Ecuador vs. Peru betting pick.

Previous Results for Ecuador and Peru

Both teams have only played two games in this year’s rescheduled Copa America, with Peru getting an impressive win over Colombia last time out. This gave them an advantage going into the final two rounds of fixtures.

  • Colombia 1, Ecuador 0
  • Brazil 4, Peru 0
  • Venezuela 2, Ecuador 2
  • Colombia 1, Peru 2

With games involving Brazil ending predictably so far, Peru has been able to shake off that early setback and will clinch a quarterfinal berth with a victory here.

Ecuador vs. Peru Match Preview

Ecuador is considered the favorite to win this one but will need to find some renewed belief after conceding in stoppage time against Venezuela. That result dropped Ecuador to the bottom of the group and raised some questions about this team’s ability to see out games.

Keep in mind that Vinotinto had to bring in 15 new players because of an outbreak of COVID.

Gustavo Alvaro’s side actually had the better of the game against Venezuela but lacked concentration when it really mattered. Unfortunately, it was just the latest in a run of poor results, as La Tricolor has now not won its last four. With just one point – and a final group game against Brazil to come – it would seem as though three points are desperately needed here.

Peru surprised many with its win against Colombia, but the three points were well deserved as Ricardo Gareca’s side dominated the game against the supposedly superior side. As a result, Peru now has a great chance of progressing and capturing a favorable draw in the last eight.

The thrashing at the hands of Brazil in its opening game has not seemed to unduly worry the players. We should expect to see most of the chances coming, once again, from attacking midfielder Sergio Pena, while experienced captain Yoshimar Yotun marshals the midfield.

Latest Odds for Ecuador vs. Peru and My Pick

Ecuador to Win+136
The Draw+204
Peru to Win+215

One thing that we have seen at this Copa America is that any team can beat any other on its day (apart from Brazil, who looks well on course to win the competition on home soil). Ecuador may be bottom of the group at the moment, but it needs to win here and will be going all out to take the three points.

Peru has already shown that its defense is a little suspect, but this game may come down to the simple question of who concedes the fewer of an expected glut of goals. I feel that both sides will find the net on more than one occasion and that the fixture’s importance will make for a great game.
