Monday Night Football Week 3 Pick – Eagles vs. Cowboys (September 27, 2021)

Monday Night Football can often bring in the ratings, especially early in the season with plenty at stake. They chose wisely with the NFC East in September.

Last season was dreadful for the division, and there seems to be improvement made across the boards for all of the teams. Only the Giants remain unbeaten, but the Eagles and Cowboys will look to pass the eye test in Week 3.

Philadelphia does limp into this one coming off a loss to San Francisco at home. The Eagles have a few dinged-up players, and that will test their depth. Losing Brandon Graham (Achilles), Brandon Brooks (chest), and Zach Ertz (COVID-19) is going to challenge this squad.

Graham was a tremendous pass-rusher, and Brooks was one of the best blockers the roster had. Jalen Hurts and his speedy options out wide will be intriguing, but Dallas has some firepower of its own.

Dak Prescott has had solid starts from CeeDee Lamb and Amari Cooper (ribs). They won a game over the Chargers last week that they have often lost over the years.

Let’s discuss this Monday Night Football matchup further by looking at the latest odds at BetOnline.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Odds

Eagles (+4)-111
Cowboys (-4)-109
Eagles to Win+175
Cowboys to Win-205
Over 52-110
Under 52-110

Dallas has covered in the past three home games over Philadelphia, in which the Eagles were an underdog. The Cowboys are 7-3 as home favorites against the Eagles.

The Cowboys have had meltdowns at home before, going 5-5 in their last ten as a favorite. Dallas has also been known for failing to cover the number at home over the years. They have not covered in five straight home games as favorites.

Philadelphia is 1-4 as a road underdog both straight up and against the spread. Here are the latest keys to victory for both of these NFC East rivals.

This tight spread and the rivalry combine to make this one of the best NFL games to bet on in week three.

Why the Eagles Will Win

Jalen Hurts can extend plays and is mobile enough to cause headaches for the Dallas defense. They made strides in their victory over the Chargers, but they still struggled in pass coverage.

Jalen Reagor and Devonta Smith have the speed and quickness to expose the secondary of Dallas.

If they play zone, Hurts can maneuver in the pocket and find the open targets. He has been such a reliable threat to run the ball. Defenses have been keeping a spy on him at all times.

That should open the ground game for Kenneth Gainwell and Miles Sanders. Keeping the clock running and owning the time of possession will put more pressure on the Dallas offense. Plus, we have seen that franchise struggle after they start to gain momentum.

Despite some bad luck injuries, the defense is still good enough to get after Prescott. Derek Barnett and Fletcher Cox are capable performers to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. They have enough players to surprise some folks and pull this upset off in Dallas on national television.

Why the Cowboys Will Win

The pieces are all coming together for Dallas, and it is just Week 3. The offense has been healthy other than Michael Gallup (ankle) and Amari Cooper (ribs). The ground game isn’t dominating games yet, and they have still been competitive through two weeks.

So far, they do look like the best team in their division.

Dak Prescott struggled to move the ball against the Chargers, but was able to find a way to get the victory. CeeDee Lamb has been outstanding through two weeks, and the defense has found ways to turn the opposition over.

The ability to pick off Justin Herbert on the second to last possession of the game was arguably the turning point. The Chargers had a drive going, and the Dallas defense found a way to keep them off the scoreboard.

Last season, the Cowboy defense was giving up points like it was their job.

Thus far, the ability to get after the pass has improved thanks to a lineup switch in the trenches.

Once DeMarcus Lawrence went down with an injury, Michael Parsons moved from linebacker to defensive end.

Parsons had a sack and four hits on the quarterback that helped the defense put more than enough pressure on Justin Herbert. The front four can do the same against Hurts. Winning this game at the line of scrimmage and getting Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott involved will allow them to win this NFC East matchup.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Prediction

Dallas has looked the part through two weeks, and while their schedule heats up soon, this is not the game they will lose.

The Eagles are missing too many pieces and will suffer to replace them. Hurts is developing confidence with his young wideouts, but the defense has had lapses in crucial spots.

Prescott will make one more play in the passing game than Hurts will, which will be the difference.

Dallas gets the win to become the likely lone 2-1 squad in the NFC East.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Pick

There is value on Philadelphia getting more than a field goal, but I believe Amari Cooper plays a role even if he is not quite at 100%.

The weapons on the Dallas offense will keep Philadelphia off-balanced. Pollard has flashed his wheels thus far in the backfield, allowing Elliott to stay fresh for the fourth quarter.

It is risky to look at the points in this one. We could see a backdoor cover by Philadelphia and their ability to churn out a last-second fourth-quarter drive. Take those Cowboys, but to win outright on Monday Night Football.
