Diego Schwartzman vs. Rafael Nadal Betting Preview – French Open, Thursday, October 8, 8020

| October 7, 2020 11:04 am PDT

Diego Schwartzman was just involved in arguably the most entertaining match of the 2020 French Open so far after five exhausting sets against his close friend Dominic Thiem. His reward is a meeting with Rafa Nadal and no one expects to see the Argentinian in the final.

I share my thoughts on his chances to beat the King of Clay in this Diego Schwartzman vs. Rafael Nadal betting preview. The post includes the latest odds and lines, analysis of both players, my prediction, and a free betting pick.

The Diego Schwartzman vs. Rafael Nadal odds on the top online betting sites illustrate my point that the Spaniard is a huge favorite in the upcoming clash. And yet, his opponent is full of confidence and loves clay, so he might be able to put up a fight.

Diego Schwartzman Analysis

It was obvious that Diego Schwartzman is at his best in the Italian Open and he carried the momentum to the 2020 Roland-Garros. The Argentinian is the archetypal clay-court specialist and destroyed every single opponent before the quarterfinal without losing a set.

Most people expected him to go home after the clash against Dominic Thiem, but Schwartzman played one of the best matches in his entire career. It was a gruesome duel with plenty of long rallies that went the distance, but the Argentinian came out on top.

The problem is that the clash against Nadal will be even harder. Thiem lacked energy and the short preparation time after the US Open triumph certainly hurt him.

The Spaniard won’t have any problems with his stamina after destroying everyone in Paris so far. Schwartzman will have to improve further to beat the big favorite and I don’t think he has a realistic chance on Thursday.

Rafael Nadal Analysis

The decision to skip the US Open and prepare for the 2020 Roland-Garros obviously worked in Rafa’s favor. Nadal has been back to his best in Paris and is yet to lose a set in the competition. He didn’t face any problems before the quarterfinal against Jannik Sinner.

The youngster caused some damage to force a tiebreak in the opening set, but Nadal held his nerve to win it and then quickly finished his opponent.

The King of Clay has been devastating and it’s close to impossible to finish a point against him. Handling his aggression is also a problem and another title in the French Open looks like the most realistic scenario for Rafa in 2020.

My Prediction and Betting Pick

I love the performance of Schwartzman and he did beat Nadal in Rome several weeks ago. The problem is that the Spaniard won the other nine matches between them, allowing his opponent only two sets over that streak.

Schwartzman did keep it close in most Grand Slam matches, though, so the price of -112 for over 33 games makes a lot of sense. The pick certainly wins if the clash reaches four sets and it could be successful in three as well.
