Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins – MLB, July 8th, 2021

| July 8, 2021 5:30 am PDT

What a difference a year makes. At this time last year, the Minnesota Twins looked like one of the most dangerous teams in the majors.

Now they can’t even sniff the MLB playoffs.

Minnesota will attempt to lick their wounds on Thursday when they host the rival Detroit Tigers. Should you bet on the Twins to get the win, or is there another wager worth attacking?

Let’s find out in Thursday’s Tigers vs. Twins betting pick and prediction.

Tigers vs. Twins Odds for July 8

Tigers to Win+124
Twins to Win-134
Over 9.5-113
Under 9.5-107

The Tigers are widely regarded as one of the worst teams in baseball, and judging by the moneylines here, they are inferior to Minnesota.

That isn’t really the case, of course.

Detroit has the better record in 2021 by five games, they’ve been better defensively, and they aren’t that far behind at the plate. At least when you consider how banged up the Twins are these days.

I still get why the Twins are favored. They offer more reliable power, and they’re at home. However, Minnesota has gone just 18-25 at home in 2021, and they aren’t in great form.

Detroit, meanwhile, are 7-3 over their last 10 games and still have dreams of inching toward a .500 record this season.

Neither side is reliable, but I do think a welcoming bet exists in this game. Let’s take a closer look at this Tigers vs. Twins matchup to find it.

Tigers vs. Twins Game Preview

Detroit does not have scary power compared to the rest of the league, but they still have enough bats to give J.A. Happ (4-4, 6.09 ERA) major problems.

Happ was once a solid lefty, but he’s now one of the most hittable pitchers in MLB. He has not missed bats (18%) over the past two years, and he gives up all kinds of hard contact to right-handed hitters.

Detroit isn’t flush with powerful righties, but they have Miguel Cabrera, Eric Haase, and Jonathan Schoop that can all give Happ fits.

On the other side is Tarik Skubal, who is basically a younger version of Happ. In saying that, I mean the awful contact allowed to righties is there, but he can actually miss bats.

Skubal also has issues with walks, so in theory, a road date with the Twins is a death trap.

That might be true, but Minnesota is not as loaded as they’ve been in the past, and Skubal can still rack up the Ks. I think he can do enough in this matchup to get the win, assuming his bats back him up.

Tigers vs. Twins Betting Pick for July 8

I like two bets a lot in this game. I am a big fan of the Over, which is probably the secondary bet. Both of these arms give up loads of contact, Minnesota can tee off at times, and the Tigers can even get it going, as well.

Especially against Happ, I like the Tigers here. Throw in Skubal’s bat-missing ways, and I like his chances to keep Minnesota’s power curbed a bit.

The Over is the safe play, but Detroit as +124 road dogs looks awfully good.

Detroit is weirdly the better team at this point. They’re trending in the right direction, and this matchup sets up better for them across the board. Hammer the Tigers and the Over in this one.
