Delta Downs Picks – Wednesday, March 3, 2021
Delta Downs brings us a nine-race schedule full of maiden, allowance, and claiming races for our Wednesday wagering and entertainment.
The three races I review yielded up some surprises, including a couple of sleepers and one solid long-odds show ticket.
Read on for my Delta Downs picks and betting tips for Wednesday, March 3, 2021.
Picks for Race 2 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $37,000.
I’m backing the 6/5 morning line favorite here — Sheriff Brown, ridden by Alex Birzer. This five-year-old gelding finished in the money for 11 of his 16 career starts, winning three. He’s not won a stakes race since the Winsham Lad Handicap (Black Type) at Sun Park back in February 2020, but his speed figures have been consistently good throughout his brief career.
And at 15/1 morning line, I like Langs Day, with Ashley Broussard in the irons, for a value show ticket. This four-year-old gelding moneyed five of his eight career starts, winning three.
- Win: Sheriff Brown 6/5
- Show: Langs Day 15/1
Picks for Race 4 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward running a distance of 6-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $38,000.
I’m calling this one for the 7/5 morning line favorite — Cool Spring, with Joel Dominguez aboard. This six-year-old mare moneyed 14 of her 21 career starts, winning four.
The longest odds in this six-horse race are 10/1, and that horse isn’t going to finish anywhere near the money, not against this field.
On the other hand, I do believe the fourth-favored (at 5/1) entry — Lady Rad, with Luis Batista aboard — could surprise us all and finish in the money, if not in first place. This five-year-old mare moneyed six of her nine career starts, winning four. Let’s call her a sleeper.
- Win: Cool Spring 7/5
- Sleeper: Lady Rad 5/1
Picks for Race 7 at Delta Downs
This is an allowance race for four-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $36,000.
I’m backing the 8/5 morning line favorite here, as well — Turn On the Magic, ridden by Tim Thornton. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money five of his nine career starts, winning two. I’m calling this race for him due to his Equibase speed figures, which are admirable.
On the other hand, I notice that Ashley Broussard is aboard an 8/1 sleeper for this race — the fourth-favored Muffin Nuts. This four-year-old gelding has a better finish-line record than the favorite: He moneyed five of his seven career starts, winning two.
- Win: Turn On the Magic 8/5
- Sleeper: Muffin Nuts 8/1
More Horse Racing Predictions for Wednesday
Delta Downs had a good and potentially profitable mix of wagers for us, but remember that I reviewed two other tracks for Wednesday:
